Fasting blood glucose is a measure of the quantity of glucose present in an individual’s blood stream after abstaining from eating for at least eight hours.1 This test is used to screen for diabetes.
The chart below provides fasting blood sugar numbers and descriptions as provided by the American Diabetes Association. For a comprehensive overview of Diabetes, see our Diabetes section under medical health issues. HDL Cholesterol and LDL Cholesterol The two basic types of cholesterol with which we are concerned with are LDL and HDL cholesterol.
These figures come out when you measure your blood sugar level in the morning after have been fasting for at least 8 hours. This is the time between the dinner and your breakfast.

I was both confounded and surprised because my diet is pretty darn excellent, particularly concerning those pesky, debilitating high glycemic carbs that proliferate the Great American Diet. If you haven’t read My Blood Sugar Numbers Confound Me, you may wish to do so before continuing so that you can have context for the rest of this post.
The first thing that occurred to me when I got my blood test results was that both my father and uncle (his brother) developed adult-onset diabetes, which is called “Type 2 Diabetes”. I always thought that they both contracted that disease in their 60s because they ate crap, were overweight and didn’t exercise, but now I’m wondering if they had a genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes and therefore would have gotten it even if they ate and exercised…ahh… well… like me?
As the video in “My Blood Sugar Numbers” describes, I borrowed my sister’s glucometer and began testing my blood. In addition to the favorable post meal blood glucose numbers, I have another blood measurement marker that’s in my favor.
Hemoglobin A1(c) is expressed in percentage terms because it’s measuring the percentage of hemoglobin that’s bonded to sugar. In subsequent posts, I’ll report about some other unhappy blood result I got in my last Life Extension test, such has high VLDL, Pattern B LDL Density Pattern, high inflammation markers and low thyroid indications. Medical and health topics fully illustrated with pictures and videos for easy understanding. Causes are very different for each case as diabetes is a group of diseases that share the same outcome : high blood sugar. Causes of type 2 diabetes: These are more diverse as there are many steps that could possibly go wrong. Causes of gestational diabetes: hormonal changes during pregnancy, notably the presence of placental hormone lactogen, may interfere with insulin receptor on target cells and make them less responsive to insulin.
Type 1 symptoms tend to come sudden, quickly, type 2 symptoms may develop over a long period of time. This entry was posted in Endocrinology (diabetes) on December 23, 2013 by Alila Medical Media. The chart above shows how sugar level is controlled in a normal person in an effective way.

We hope that this information will help you and increase your knowledge about sugar level in human body. Determining what is a high blood sugar level or a normal blood sugar level can be tricky and often times difficult.
What is a high blood sugar level reading is considered to be known as hyperglycemia or high blood sugar. If hyperglycemia goes untreated for long periods of time then it can result in serious health problems such as risk, heart disease, vision problems and nerve problems or damage. Fasting is in a state of non-eating, where the stomach is empty and as much glucose as possible has been moved from the blood stream. Alba, What would be the glucose reaction if I eat 2 scrambled eggs with 2 slices of salt-cured bacon and one slice of wholegrain toast? I’ve been testing fasting blood glucose, and one and two hour post meal, the detailed results of which I’ll share in a future post. This measures how much glucose permanently gets glycated (bonded) to hemoglobin in red blood cells. I'm a big believer in sustainability, and am a bit nutty about optimizing my diet, supplements, hormones and exercise.
Alcohol and snacking (assuming the snacks are high glycemic) will boost blood sugar and over time that could cause insulin resistance.
As the process of blood sugar control  is complex and involves many steps, anything that goes wrong at any step would result in the disease (Fig. The reason why this happens is unclear, but genetic factors are believed to play a major role. 2: Anatomy of a pancreatic islet showing beta cells selectively destroyed in type 1 diabetes. In some cases, beta cells are dysfunctional and produce a modified version of insulin that can no longer bind to its receptor. This occurs in about 5 to 10% of all pregnancies, more commonly during the third trimester, and if left untreated, may progress to type 2 diabetes. The earliest signs of diabetes are excessive thirst, frequent urination, then come excessive hunger, fatigue, weight loss, high blood pressure, blurred vision, frequent infections (especially in the skin, genitals, bladder). But if we have high sugar diet on regular basis, then our body lose control over sugar level with time. Sugar level suddenly increases after having food but controlled in a normal person, but rises very high in prediabetic and diabetic person.
That is a tough question to answer, because everyone is different, everyone has different body types and there are many factors to take into consideration such as age. When our bodies cannot make enough insulin or can’t respond to the amount of insulin that one takes then they body will be hyperglycemic. Kids are not as likely to suffer from this because normally they are newly diagnosed diabetic patients or patients who have just been diagnosed with diabetes.
A high blood sugar level is normally considered high when the readings fall above your target range. This measurement roughly indicates your average blood sugar over the previous three months, and the higher it has been over the past three months, the more likely it is that glucose (sugar) is permanently bonded to hemoglobin, which is not a good thing.

He reports that it’s not uncommon for people on restricted carbohydrate diets (like me) to have high fasting glucose serum numbers. If you legitimately are on a low-carb diet and both the post meal and A1(c) numbers are good, then it could be that your situation is accurately described by Chris’ explanation quoted above. In healthy people (upper panel), pancreas produces enough insulin, insulin binds to receptor on target cell and induces glucose intake.

In other cases, the problem lies within insulin receptor or in the downstream signaling in target cells. During past years it used to occur in old age people, but now it is also found in children. If we check our sugar level before having breakfast (i.e called Fasting Test) then sugar lever for different types of people will be as follows. Our energy comes from this sugar or glucose and is carried to the rest of our body through the bloodstream.
Long term damage from high blood sugar normally results from an older person who has let this problem go or not spoke out about the symptoms that they have been having. A target range can occur when you have monitored your sugar levels for long periods of time and the doctor takes that into consideration with other factors such as age, gender and medical history. If blood test results are coming back in the upper ranges on the is chart further medical treatment by a doctor is probably indicated. In type 1 diabetes (middle panel) insulin production is reduced, less or no insulin binds to receptor, glucose stays outside target cell (in the blood). We should plan our diet according to a diet chart to manage right level of sugar level in our blood.
As you can see the blood sugar amount increases after a meal when the food is digested and glucose is absorbed into the blood. In type 2 diabetes (lower panel) pancreas produces enough insulin but something goes wrong either with the receptor binding or insulin signaling in the target cell, glucose stays outside the cell (in the blood). Here again, genetic factors predispose susceptibility to the disease, but it’s believed that lifestyle plays a very important role.
The blood sugar level falls as insulin does its work of moving the glucose from the blood in to tissues needing it for food.

Keep your glucose levels functioning like the chart above and everything should be just fine.
