Maggie estimates that she can complete the trek in five days, barring unforeseen circumstances similar to what she experienced in 2012, when, after training for many months, she aggressively charged up the first ten peaks before being overcome with nausea, dehydration, and severe fatigue. Against her will, she abandoned ship early, and was subsequently diagnosed with giardia, a water-borne infectious bacteria with severe consequences. Following these instructions, Maggie grew increasingly frustrated and  confused.  She was unable to maintain consistent blood glucose values, and had no control over her overall health. More importantly, Maggie was uncomfortable with stringent dietary restrictions, and was not convinced that carbohydrate counting was helping her maintain consistent blood sugar values.
Maggie considered herself a pseudo-vegan before we started working together.  This was great news, because the nutrient value of the foods she was eating was very high. By reducing her intake of foods like peanut butter and mixed nuts, she increased her consumption of foods high in REAL carbohydrates, resulting in a diet with over 15 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.
During the day, Maggie subsisted mainly on fruits because they are energy-dense, and in the evening she ate meals containing her favorite vegetables. In addition, Maggie reduced her consumption of alcohol, and became acutely aware of the effect that drinking even a single glass of beer or wine had on her blood sugar.
When she returned home after each run, her blood sugar values were in the target zone, and remained in the target zone for up to 24 hours afterwards.  In a short period of time, frequent exercise was helping Maggie control her blood sugar values almost effortlessly.
In combination with a diet high in REAL carbohydrates and low in fat, Maggie returned to her usual high-energy state in less than one week.
Maggie’s ability to take control of her blood sugar is a prime example of how quickly the right lifestyle modification can take effect.  It took less than one week for Maggie’s fasting blood sugar readings to drop, and within two weeks she was back to one hour trail runs, 7 days a week.

All students with diabetes do not understand why their bodies are not functioning correctly.

Besides being refreshing, watermelon can keep you full with a good combination of fiber, half the amount of vitamin C that is recommended for the day, and less than 100 calories for two cups worth.
Low calorie plus high in protein, cottage cheese is also low in fat, making it one of the excellent low calorie filling foods. At 78 calories and just under 7 grams of protein (6.3), eggs weigh in as a great snack or can be boosted up to make a good meal any time of the day.
Turkey is a great choice for low-calorie diet as it can provide great amount of protein while keeping the calories low. Fresh figs are sweet but because they are high in fiber they keep your blood sugar levels even so there is no erratic high and low. While potatoes have gotten a bad rap because of their carbohydrate level, on the plus side they have been shown to keep dieters full longer.
With 6 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein for each serving, this wheat product will help you stay satisfied longer so you won’t be so apt to reach for junk foods like cookies, cake and candy. When food intake results in a rise in blood sugar (within a normal range), the body on its own releases  insulin which moves the excess sugar out of the blood and into cells. This is a seriously dangerous solution and one that does not need to be taught to students of any age. The person who designed this game has no concern for the education of your children nor how dangerously misleading this lesson could be. Instead of grabbing a sweet cake from the vending machine, try a natural sugar to keep your blood sugar even. Instead of encouraging students to take care of their bodies, the CSCOPE lessons has the potential of misleading kids into thinking that more insulin will fix high blood sugar levels. If he or she makes some asinine comment about your coming up with something to replace CSCOPE with, point out that it is the job of the superintendent to provide proper, correct instruction materials. Chickpeas, black-eyed peas, red kidney beans, black beans, fava beans, lentils, and edamame are all low calorie filling foods. You can add a little red pepper flakes on your pizza for a little heat with no extra calories.
