Lein Applied Diagnostics is a start-up SME that has developed, with support from a DTI SMART award, patented technology for non-invasively measuring blood glucose levels based on scanning a light beam through the anterior chamber of the eye. NPL's Peter Harris, who has many years experience in mathematical modelling, was seconded to the SME to develop a model of the glucose meter.
The results of the work have enabled a better understanding of the interactions between the instrument and the subject, critical to the correct operation of the instrument. With increased confidence in the operation of their instrument Lein are now looking to optimise the design of the glucose meter. Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, and where blood glucose levels can undergo significant fluctuations. Hitachi has conducted extensive research concerning the thermal energy generated by metabolic reactions in the human body, which reflect a balance between blood sugar levels and local oxygen supply.
Hitachi's investigational device uses special sensors that accurately measure various temperatures and light characteristics in a person's fingertip.
Hitachi plans to gather further experimental data and, after conducting clinical trials, file for regulatory approval under the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law in Japan and to the FDA. What is this measure?The level of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in an individual’s blood indicates the amount of glucose, or sugar, in his or her system over the past two to three months.
