I get that both types of diabetics have trouble maintaining homeostasis of blood glucose levels. I first had the opportunity to get a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) last year when I made the switch from daily injections (4 or 5 to be precise) to an insulin pump.

By stumbling across a video showcasing a new CGM by Dexcom (via my Twitter feed of all places), I was sold instantly that I needed this in my daily life. My Dexcom contact, Nathan Nava (a fellow T1) told me some good advice “Think of your abdomen as a 4-way grid and rotate the sensor from top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right and repeat. Each sticker lasts a full day, giving it the capacity to become a low-cost replacement for the traditional needle test strip. Kristina Ruotsalo, a veterinarian, you will probably have to monitor your dog daily when starting insulin, but later you'll check it only weekly if the medication is working correctly.
Glucose homeostasis relies on the balance and interactions of two hormones — insulin and glucagon — to maintain a healthy blood glucose level. This will raise the blood glucose level, which in turn stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin and allow more glucose absorption.
The hormone stimulates the liver to release glucose stored within its cells, thus raising blood glucose levels to a normal level. Left untreated, diabetes mellitus and the associated hyperglycemia can damage the kidneys, eyes, and circulatory system. As for the insulin pump catheter, keep that at least 3 inches away or preferably, the opposite side of the Dexcom sensor”.
Taking blood samples with the lip-stick method is the least painful way to test your pet's glucose at home.
