Air Canada have started a strict enforcement of their carry-on baggage procedures on Monday in what critics are calling a cash-grab.
Airline staff at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport have been stationed at both check-in and security checkpoints to ensure carry-on bags meet size and weight requirements.
Bags that meet the airline’s carry-on dimensions will receive a red tag, which the airline says will help reduce wait times at security.
The airline says if passengers get to security and need to check a bag that exceeds size limits, they’ll receive a special card to get quickly back to a check-in agent, and then on to the departure gate. Air Canada specifies that a personal item can include a backpack, briefcase or laptop computer measuring up to 16 by 33 by 43 centimetres and a standard item such as a suitcase measuring up to 23 by 40 by 55 centimetres including wheels and handles.
The airline began charging a $25 checked-bag fee last fall on its lowest-class domestic flights and on flights to and from the Caribbean and Mexico.
The airline says the tagging program will expand progressively to other airports across the country through June.
Qantas will change international baggage allowances from counting number of bags to counting their weight, bringing them in line with Emirates, as the Qantas-Emirates alliance starts up on 1 April. Business class passengers see their allowances more than halved, from 96 kg split over three 32 kg bags to a limit of no more than 40 kg in total. The changes take effect on 31 March, for all passengers who book flights on or after 26 February.
Instead of getting an allowance like 'two bags at 23 kg each' under old the piece and weight system, you'll get something like "32 kg" under the new weight-based model. Previously, Platinum members had an allowance of 4 x 32 kg bags in business or first, and 3 x 32 bags in economy and premium economy. Aviation journalist and travel columnist John took his first long-haul flight when he was eight weeks old and hasn't looked back since.
The piece concept will be gone, so you could check in two bags (or even x number of bags) as long as the total is 30kg. Wow - that is quite a step down for high value customers, and quite a step up for low value ones.
Yes - this is major news for someone like me, who travels between syd and lon 4 times a year, paying my own economy class fare.
After trying Qantas Silver for a year, I discovered Emirates' generous 30KG DEFAULT limit regardless of any points, saw they had A380 and a good product of their own, so I switched, plain and simple! I hope Qantas will make it clear on their website of the newly announced provisions for OW Emeralds, of 20kg on top of applicable class limits and for this to be communicated to check-in staff. What happened to Qantas saying that where Frequent Flyer benefits apply, the higher one would be the norm?
Dr T, I don't necessarily disagree in most cases, but I've done a bunch of conferences where being able to chuck a couple of boxes of printed materials plus some promo swag into my suitcase has been a real benefit. And, of course, the corollary is: if using the full allowance is such an exceptional case, why get rid of it?
So Qantas, starts off with a weight system, changes to a piece and weight system in May last year and is transitioning back a weight system to avoid confusion in the Qantas-Emirates Alliance. It is quite amusing that a Plat FF travelling in international economy has  LESS allowance than domestic economy.
We’ve rounded up the current hand luggage allowances for some of the major airlines to hopefully save you from making a difficult choice to pack your treasured lenses when you get to the airport!
When it comes to expensive and fairly fragile cameras, lenses, flashguns and other accessories, there’s a lot to be said for the security of taking your kit onto the plane with you as carry-on luggage.
The rigours of airport baggage handling systems and an aircraft’s cargo hold are much less appealing.

A good quality, medium-sized photo backpack is an obvious choice for taking camera kit as carry-on luggage, but there are factors you need to be aware of.
A bigger issue is the maximum allowed weight of the bag, with much greater differences between different airlines and tour operators. Some airlines merely stipulate that you must be able to lift a carry-on bag into an overhead compartment, unaided.
The table above shows the current carry-on baggage restrictions for various popular airlines, when travelling economy class. Jetstar is reducing its carry-on baggage allowance across all Australian domestic and international flights from late November in both business class and economy.
As Australian Business Traveller tipped earlier this month, the maximum weight per cabin bag on most Jetstar flights will decrease from 10kg to 7kg, bringing it in line with all other major Australian airlines.
The only exception to the rule is Jetstar Japan, where passengers on its all-economy flights can continue to bring 10kg of carry-on baggage: keeping it aligned with both Japan Airlines and All Nippon (ANA) which fly on a number of the same routes. For passengers who had already booked flights prior to October 28 for travel beyond November 25, Jetstar will honour the higher baggage allowance that was presented to the traveller at the time of booking – either 20kg in business class or 10kg in economy. Travellers attempting to bring aboard bags that are too large or heavy will find them placed into the aircraft hold in line with the checked baggage allowance that was purchased for that flight.
Those on a 'carry-on only' fare who exceed the published limits will have to cough up $50 for their newly-checked baggage, whether it’s discovered at the check-in desk or at the boarding gate.
Both Qantas and Virgin Australia already restrict cabin bags to a maximum of 7kg each, as do a number of low-cost carriers that reach Australian shores including Air Asia, Scoot and Cebu Pacific. Chris lives by the motto that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, a great latte, an opera ticket and a glass of wine!
My personal issue with 7kg is that if you fly with them you are forced to put things you can't afford to lose in checked baggage, then if they lose said baggage "it's not our fault, you should have put them in your carry-on". Once on a Qantas flight from LHR I overhead two pax talking about their first trip to Australia. So you are saying that (for example) an uninformed family booking on Qantas should be punished for a controversial practice on the Qantas website. I'm not suggesting that Qantas is right but the only way Qantas can be reformed effectively is if the market responds accordingly. If a passenger chooses to be ill-informed, in the face of freely available information, then "foolish" or "ignorant" would be an appropriate adjective. Yep, in the words of John Oliver, to say JetStar are the douches of the airline industry is like saying the Titanic was a disappointing holiday. I understand and acknowledge the counter argument of they are not a full service airline and when you pay peanuts you should expect monkeys. However, with drip pricing (a case that has the airline currently in the Federal Court,) they aren’t nearly as competitive as they would like us to believe. Still, the comment has to be made that the service and products customers expect are doubling at twice the speed that the prices they are willing to pay for it decreases.
Carry on baggage is a nightmare - people bring huge bags and take all the space so that if you get on at the end of the boarding time and  have only a small carry on you have to search around to find any space.
Here we have provided the requirements of Carry-on luggage of JetBlue, including size restrictions and weight restrictions.
To be able to in shape in the overhead bin, your carry-on bag should not go over 24 inches in length (approx. JetBlue currently is deficient in a restriction on the weight of carry-on baggage, both for regional or international flights. Golds were allowed an extra 23 kg bag in premium economy or an extra 32 kg bag in economy, while Silvers (and Qantas Club members) received an extra 32kg piece in premium economy or economy.

It would be difficult to police when QF travellers are told they have too much weight when they want to get onto EK metal from, say, Dubai to London. If you want to take you camera and gear abroad, every airline has specific carry-on restrictions based on size and weight. That said, photo backpacks often become a little more compact than their stated dimensions once the various chest and waist straps are pressed in, along with the often deep padding in the back and shoulder areas.
Others have a relatively low weight limit that’s likely to be exceeded even if the backpack is only half full of camera kit. However, these are subject to change, so it’s important to check with the airline you are using before you set off on your travels.
Since Jetstar started they have done everything they can to have an element of something to cause anger for their Customers. On the subject of international connecting passengers coming off Qantas flights on to Jetsar, all I can say is serve them right!
With Choice Magazine stating that in some cases the difference between a comparable QF ticket and JQ ticket, (that is, with food, entertainment and baggage included on the JQ fare,) was as little as $7 AUD. It is not the weight limit that bothers me - it is airline failure to enforce any rules about size, weight or number of bags. Carry-on baggage is the only responsibility of the traveler and JetBlue will suppose no obligation for property taken on the deck of the aircraft. Nevertheless, consider that it is possible to put your stuff in the overhead bin if no support is out there and the item does not fit under the seat ahead. Your luggage allowances are changing." style="display:inline-block" title="Flying Qantas internationally? I have been on multiple trips in the last 2 yrs whilst Platinum, and even when I go Skiing I take ~25kg, and sometimes if I have been doing lots of shopping I will check in my Cabin bag with 15kg shopping, so less that 40kg.
I have been to Hawaii on a 10 day trip and only taken hand luggage of no more than 10kgs and that includes the weight of the bag. They were chatting to the cabin crew  and commented that they were curious about the Jetstar flight on their itinerary and I thought, you muppet! Would hate to do an EK then onto a JQ flight (if that isnt already a disappointment for some). Customer service section includes the contact details (address, phone number, fax, email, hours, etc.) that are needed by user to contact the service. With me anyway, I brought about 37KG (uh, accidentally) with me in the form of my suitcase, and a large rug I bought for someone. Leave your LOUIS VUITTON streamer trunks at home and pack a light weight bag and save your backs.
Virgin and Qantas restrict to 7KG's?? I have flown Virgin very regularly of late both International and domestic and have never been questioned when I appear with my international size carry on - well over 7 KG's at times. The other issue is for International passengers, particularly from the USA that have arrived and find themselves on a Jetstar connection.
Can't imagine that happening with Qantas, new allowances and 'get all Emirates with luggage' or not!
Most US passengers have at least 2 carry ons as in the US I have never seen the airlines police the passengers boarding with well above the cabin 'limits' Southwest may, but the full service carriers - Delta, American and United do not unless you are on a CRJ where the larger bags are taken at the gate for free and returned to you at the gate on arrival.
