Working with airline members of IATA and aircraft manufacturers, an optimum size guideline for carry-on bags has been agreed that will make the best use of cabin storage space. Airline officials say the guidelines help ensure all passengers can fit their bag in an overhead compartment, but Chris Chmura sees it another way. The worlds airlines have no standardized carry on luggage size limits making it impossible to buy one bag that will always meet the requirements.
Previously the International Air Transport Association (IATA) had guidelines for it’s member airlines about carry on luggage size limits.
Cabin baggage should have a maximum length of 56 cm (22 inches), width of 45 cm (18 inches) and depth of 25 cm (10 inches) including all handles, side pockets, wheels etc. Despite all the media storm the situation remains as it’s always been except that it seems at the moment that IATA have no published guidelines. We recommend a carry on luggage size that falls within the following dimensions to conform with the current requirements of most airlines. Cabin bags within these size limits will be suitable for a greater number of airlines but still provide a decent amount of space.
Frequent fliers that travel on multiple airlines particularly those who travel to Europe may with to consider purchasing 2 bags – one larger bag and one smaller bag to use with budget airlines that have more restrictive policies.
Remember a carry on duffel bag is also a good option for those that like to think outside the box. The maximum dimensions for your personal item, such as a shoulder bag, backpack, laptop bag or other small item, are 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm). Many times if your bag is slightly larger than the advertised size restrictions you won’t have any problems. Most airlines allow one check-in bag plus one “personal item”, where personal item is defined as a laptop bag, briefcase, musical instrument case, purse or other smaller bag. You have many options when it comes to bags, but the numbers you need to know are the guidelines for carry-on luggage.
While every effort has been made to ensure the information on the chart is accurate, you can also check with your airline before flying for detailed guidelines. Airline Travel Carry-on Guidelines by Shailynn Krow You are allowed one carry-on and one personal item.

Southwest Airlines follows Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations regarding carry-on luggage. Passengers are allowed to check one stroller (any size) and one car seat or Child Restraint System (CRS) for free. Small, vaccinated domestic cats and dogs that are at least eight weeks old can be carried on in an animal carrier.
As of September 26, 2006, the TSA has limited the items such as beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel, hair spray, etc.
At present it seems unlikely that airlines will adopt the smaller proposed size as their maximum limit.
Briefcases and laptop computers are considered hand baggage and may be brought on board in addition to the limits indicated. Some airlines let you hang your items in the flight closet if there is space and it can’t hurt to ask.

These days, it can be hard to know what to expect at the security gate or check in, but the basic rule is that length + width + height of carry-on bags should add up to 45” or less. Market indices are shown in real time, except for the DJIA, which is delayed by two minutes. Southwest passengers are allowed two carry-on items: one bag, no larger than 10 x 16 x 24 inches, and a smaller personal item like a purse, briefcase, backpack, camera, laptop or food container.
That’s smaller than the current maximum size which is 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches. This work will help to iron out inconsistencies and lead to an improved passenger experience,” said Tom Windmuller, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Airport, Passenger, Cargo and Security.
International Airlines can have strictly enforced weight limits so you need to think seriously about the weight of your case. It is important to note that if you are carrying even a purse it may be counted as your personal item, so be prepared to stow it away into one of your other bags as you go through check-in. For children who have a ticket or for whom an available seat exists, the car seat or CRS can be carried on and does not count toward the one bag plus one personal item limit.

The limit of carriers on-board may be capped at five and pets are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. All items are the sole responsibility of the passenger and Southwest Airlines reserves the right to refuse carry-on baggage deemed harmful or dangerous, at its sole discretion. There are some carry on bags that are dedicated to keeping your clothes wrinkle and crease free.
In addition, carriers must be small enough to stow under the seat in front of you and passengers may not sit in the exit row or a row with no forward under seat stowage. The carry-on bag must fit in the sizer without force, and dimensions cannot exceed 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches tall. Southwest passengers would be among the hardest hit if IATA's recommendation becomes standard across the industry. If traveling with children, passengers can bring one diaper bag per ticketed child in addition to the personal and carry-on items.
