You have been randomly and anonymously paired with another participant to play a game. One of you will be selected at random to be the proposer; the other will be the responder. You will learn whether you are the proposer or the responder prior to making any decision.
Here is a short description of the game. To start, the proposer receives 10 points; and the responder also receives 10 points. The proposer can decide to send nothing, some, or all of his/her 10 points to the responder. This amount is then tripled by us and given to the responder. Once the responder receives the tripled amount he/she can decide to send nothing, some, or all of it to the proposer. The game then ends and you get paid according to the points you have accrued (1 point=rupees 40).
Just to give you a sense of the whole thing, here is what you can expect -
screen 1: You are here, reading these instructions.
screen 2: You answer a few questions about the game.
screen 3: You answer a short 3 minute survey.
screen 4: You play the game if you are the proposer; you wait for the proposer to play the game if you are the responder.
screens 5 and 6(for the proposer): You answer a few questions regarding your play and then wait for the responder to play the game.
screens 5 and 6(for the responder): You play the game and then answer a few questions regarding your play.
screen 7: You get to know your payoff.
screens 8 and 9: You answer a short 5 minute survey.
Please note that nobody (including the organizers) would be able to identify what was your specific role and action in the game. Data is collected and stored anonymously and payoff distribution happens in stages involving multiple persons so that no single individual has all the information to match a participant with his/her payoff.
