The purpose of this form is to give you information to help you decide if you want to take part in a research study. This consent form includes information about:

Please take the time to read this form. We will talk to you about taking part in this research study. You should ask us any questions you have about this form and about this research study.

You do not have to participate if you don't want to.

What will I be asked to do if I choose to be in this study?

We will ask you to observe red-and-blue pixilated images for short intervals and determine which color is dominant. You will then be asked to consult advisors about your decision and update accordingly. This will be repeated over many rounds. You will be asked questions about the experiment at the end of the study. It should take around 45 minutes.

Risks

We do not think that there are any risks to taking part in this study. You will be exposed to red-and-blue pixelated images and asked to make decisions that have the potential for small monetary gain. Mental stress and eye strain should be minimal.

Benefits

You will not benefit from taking part in this study beyond monetary compensation, but your participation may help improve our understanding of human information selection and processing with important real-world implications.

Confidentiality

No personal information will be saved and minimal information will be collected. All participants will be anonymous and randomly recruited via the Online Recruitment System for Economic Experiments (ORSEE) subject pool, which contains built-in protocols for privacy protections.

Compensation

You will receive a $6 payment for participating in this study, with the opportunity to earn up to $14 dollars based on your performance in the study. Specifically, you will earn a bonus for each correct answer provided.

Costs

Will I incur costs if I take part in this study?

There will be no costs to you for being in this study.

Voluntary Participation

Participation in research is entirely voluntary. Your decision about whether to participate will have no impact on your employment, student status, or any other entitlements. If you do choose to participate, the answers given will have no impact on your student status, salary, grade, or employment with Columbia University. You may withdraw from participation at any time.
