Welcome. This is an experiment in decision making. Various research foundations and institutions have provided funding for this experiment and you will have the opportunity to make a considerable amount of money which will be paid to you at the end. Make sure you pay close attention to the instructions because the choices you make will influence the amount of money you will take home with you today. Please ask questions if any instructions are unclear.
Here are the instructions for the main task in the experiment. There is one additional short task and then a questionnaire after you complete this task.
The task is an investment choice in groups of 2 participants. We will call one of the participants the Role A participant and the other the Role B participant. The two participants simultaneously decide whether to invest or not invest. If at least one chooses to invest, both participants receive {{ Constants.general_benefit }}. The cost of investment is {{ Constants.volunteer_costH }} for the Role A participant and {{ Constants.volunteer_costL }} for the Role B participant. In summary, there are four possible outcomes for the task:

The experiment consists of 10 identical Matches that each proceed as follows. At the beginning of each Match, groups of two will be formed by randomly matching two participants. Each group will engage in the investment problem a randomly determined number of times, each of which we call a Round. In particular, at the end of each Round, the computer is programmed to select to continue to another Round with 85% chance and to end the Match with the remaining 15% chance. Every Round, one of the participants will be randomly assigned to Role A and the other to Role B. The chances of being assigned to Role A or to Role B are equal every Round. Let us stress that you engage in the task with the same other participant in each Round of a Match, but then get matched with a different participant when a new Match begins.
We will not inform you at the end of each Round whether the computer has selected continue or end for the Match. Instead, we will have groups engage in 10 Rounds and after that, if the Match ended during that 10 Rounds, we will then inform you of the Round in which it ended. If the Match did not end during the 10 Rounds, the groups will continue with another 10 Rounds, and then keep going in 10 Round blocks until the Match ends. For example if the Match actually ends in Round 3, then you will engage in 10 Rounds and then see that the Match ended in Round 3. Or, in a second example, if the Match actually ends in Round 18, then you will engage in 20 Rounds and then see that the Match ended in Round 18.
At the end of each Round, we will inform you of your choice, the choice of the other participant in you group, and both participant's points. For your convenience, we will provide a table with this information for all the Rounds of the current Match on your screen. The table also includes the investment costs. At the end of the experiment, we will add up all the points you earned in the Rounds before the Match ended (for example, Rounds 1-3 in the first example above or Rounds 1-18 in the second example) and convert them into dollars at the rate of $1 for every 25 points. You will also get $6 dollars for participating today. We will pay you with Venmo as soon as the experiment ends.
