Please read this consent agreement carefully before you decide to participate in the study.
Purpose of the research study: The purpose of the study is to help us learn how people behave in simple economic situations where earnings depend on one's own and others' decisions.
What you will do in the study: You will engage in a number of decision tasks on your computer. Your cash earnings will be determined by your own decisions and the decisions of other participants in the experiment. You will receive your earnings at the end of the experiment.
Time required: The study will require about 2 hours of your time. There is no obligation to return for any additional sessions.
Risks: There are no anticipated risks in this study.
Benefits: There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this research study. The study may help us understand how decisions are made in economic markets.
Confidentiality: The information that you give in the study will be handled confidentially. Your name will not be collected or linked to the data.
Voluntary participation: Your participation in the study is completely voluntary, and your academic status at UVA (grades, etc.) will not be impacted by your decisions.
Right to withdraw from the study: You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty.
How to withdraw from the study: If you want to withdraw from the study, tell the experimenter and exit the program. There is no penalty for withdrawing. You will still be paid the $6 participation payment as you leave if you withdraw. If you would like to withdraw after your materials have been submitted, please contact Andrew Kloosterman.
Payment: You will be paid $6 for showing up today. In addition, you will receive earnings paid in cash that will depend on your decisions and others’ decisions. In past experiments, earnings have averaged about $25 per person. Earnings will typically differ from person to person.
