Johnny Depp praised Amber Heard in a text message to her mother, Paige, as he thanked her fore caring for him.

The 58-year-old is suing his ex-wife, 35, for $50million for defamation with Amber countersuing for $100million for defamation in the libel trial in Fairfax, Virginia.

The libel case follows an opinion piece that Amber, 35, wrote for the Washington Post in which she said she was a victim of domestic abuse.

Despite not directly mentioning him, Johnny has claimed that the piece in 2018 was written about him.

On Monday, while Amber's legal team cross-examined Johnny, the court was shown a text message that was sent by Depp to Amber's mother Paige in August 2014.

In the message, Johnny was full of praise for Amber and how she looked after him during a difficult time.

He wrote: 'There's no luckier man on this earth to have the strength that Amber gives me...

'Your daughter has risen far about the nightmarish task of taking care of this poor old junkie...

'Suffice to say I have never loved a woman or a thing more. She has the strength of a thousand men. And that is due to no one or nothing but you sweetheart.'

Johnny signed off the text: 'your son outlaw'.

The court was also played an audio clip in which Johnny and Amber are talking in raised voices.

Depp is asked by Amber's lawyers if he said in the clip: 'I will never be clean and sober'.

Johnny told the court that he believes he actually said: 'I've never been clean and sober.'

In another clip played to the court, an upset sounding Amber is heard saying as the coupled argued: 'All the coke you've done today, and all the booze you've drunk today, has it helped us?'

Johnny is heard to answer: 'I've just got the coke.'
