Raquel Pennington, a former friend of Amber Heard, resumed giving evidence via video link on Wednesday. The mixed martial artist recalled a time she claims Johnny Depp yelled at his then-wife, after smashing things inside his L.A penthouses

Johnny Depp trashed his own penthouses after a fight with his then-wife Amber Heard, a witness claimed in court on Wednesday.

Ms Heard's former friend Raquel Pennington resumed giving evidence via video link in Virginia's Fairfax County Courthouse, as the defamation trial between the former couple continues.

Throughout her deposition, the mixed martial artist alleged that she and others in Ms Heard and Mr Depp's 'inner circle' removed the actress from her then-husband during a row in 2015.

Ms Pennington claimed the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, 58, had smashed items inside two of his five Los Angeles penthouses when she arrived at the scene.

The witness alleged that Mr Depp continued to yell when she 'stepped between' the then-couple, but admitted that she never witnessed the actor physically abuse or throw anything at his former spouse.

At one point during her testimony, Ms Pennington grew emotional and tearfully claimed she feared for Ms Heard's physically safety towards the end of the couple's relationship.

Yesterday, the athlete explained how she and Ms Heard no longer speak - claiming they grew apart - but are 'not enemies'.

'I really wanted them to be able to get it together,' Ms Pennington tearfully recalled when discussing the former couple's relationship troubles.

When asked why she was scared for Ms Heard, she replied: 'He [Mr Depp] could be very unpredictable and she she didn’t have a lot of self preservation.'

Ms Pennington was then asked specifically what type of harm she was worried about.

'In the beginning, I wasn’t worried. Towards the end, when physical abuse was more evident, I was worried,' the witness recalled, growing tearful.

'I was worried for her physical safety. I was worried when he turned, he would accidentally do something that was worse than he ever intended.'

Ms Pennington then went on to explain how Mr Depp would 'switch' personalities at time.

She told the court: 'Johnny would be acting like his wonderful self for a certain period of an occasion where people were hanging out, or sometimes just privately at home, and I never knew what [would] cause it… a switch would happen where he would either disappear and go somewhere off by himself, or his mood would change to something darker and ….yeah.'

Mr Depp is suing Heard for alleged defamation over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, in which she stated she was a victim of domestic abuse and recalled her experiences after going public with her claims.

The article did not mention the actor by name, but Mr Depp argues that he has lost work and been financially impacted by the piece.

The Aquaman actress is countersuing her ex-husband for $100million (£81million).

The trial continues.
