Instructions for the task - Puzzles task

{% endblock %} {% block content %}

  • Please carefully read the instructions below explaining the task to be performed by Green players (you) in each round.

  • In each round, the Green player will get 45 seconds to solve three puzzles.

  • Each puzzle consists of a visual geometric design with a missing piece. The Green player is supposed to fill in the missing piece from eight possible choices.

  • Each puzzle looks as follows (with varying difficulty):

  • The Yellow Player will then get assigned to a lottery. The number of correct puzzles solved by the Green Player determines the lottery that gets assigned to the Yellow Player. This lottery leads to either one of two outcomes (high and low) but with differing probabilities.

  • A refresher on lotteries - What is a lottery? For example, the following lottery: ₹0 with 20% probability or ₹500 with 80% probability - means that there is a 20% chance that the Yellow Player wins ₹0 and an 80% probability that Yellow Player wins ₹500. Alternatively, think of a lottery as a 10 sided die. In this example, the die has 0es on 2 sides, and 500s on 8 sides.

  • Each puzzle solved correctly by the Green Player increases the probability of higher earnings for the Yellow Player. For example:

  • Number of correct answers by the Performer Lottery earned by the Yellow Player
    0 correct answers with 20% probability the outcome is ₹500; with 80% the outcome is ₹0.
    1 correct answer with 30% probability the outcome is ₹500; with 70% the outcome is ₹0.
    2 correct answers with 40% probability the outcome is ₹500; with 60% the outcome is ₹0.
    3 correct answers with 50% probability the outcome is ₹500; with 50% the outcome is ₹0.

  • The total number of questions that the Green player (you) answered correctly (out of the three) determines the lottery that gets assigned to the Yellow player. The lottery has only two outcomes: {constants.lowpayoff} and {constants.highpayoff}.

  • Once the lottery gets assigned to the Yellow player, it is automatically drawn by the experiment. The outcome drwan from the lottery are the earnings for the Yellow player for that round.

  • The higher the number of correct questions solved by the Green player, the greater the chance that the lottery will deliver a high outcome of {constants.highpayoff} as in the example given above.

  • Remember that the Green player gets 45 seconds to solve a set of three puzzles in each round.

  • Yellow players will only be shown the earnings drawn from the lottery (that is,{constants.lowpayoff} or {constants.highpayoff}) for each round and then be asked to pay the Green player out of the separate pot of $2.

  • Number of puzzles or questions that you, that is, the Green players solve correctly thus determine the earnings of the Yellow player. Green players earnings from a round are thus equal to what their assigned Yellow player pays to them from a pot of $2.00, their own completion fee as well as any earning as a random agent that may be assigned to them from another Yellow Player in the later experimental session.
