Instructions Task - The Puzzles' Task

{% endblock %} {% block content %}

Remember that for the entire experiment you have been randomly assigned to be the performer!

  • The Performer will perform 3 puzzles in 45 seconds.

  • Each puzzle consists of a visual geometric design with a missing piece. The Performers are supposed to fill in the missing piece from eight possible choices.

  • Each puzzle looks as follows (with varying difficulty):

  • In a later experiment (to be performed within a week), a player called Decider will be randomly paired with you for each round of the task that you perform in this experimental session.

  • The Decider will then get assigned to a lottery. The number of correct puzzles solved by the Performer (you) determines the lottery that gets assigned to the Decider. This lottery leads to either one of two outcomes (high and low) but with differing probabilities.

  • A refresher on lotteries - What is a lottery? For example, the following lottery: ₹0 with 20% probability or ₹500 with 80% probability - means that there is a 20% chance that the Decider wins ₹0 and an 80% probability that Decider wins ₹500. Alternatively, think of a lottery as a 10 sided die. In this example, the die has 0es on 2 sides, and 500s on 8 sides.

  • Each puzzle solved correctly by the Performer increases the probability of higher earnings for the Decider. For example:

  • Number of correct answers by the Performer Lottery earned by the Decider
0 correct answers with 20% probability the outcome is ₹500; with 80% the outcome is ₹0.
1 correct answer with 30% probability the outcome is ₹500; with 70% the outcome is ₹0.
2 correct answers with 40% probability the outcome is ₹500; with 60% the outcome is ₹0.
3 correct answers with 50% probability the outcome is ₹500; with 50% the outcome is ₹0.

  • Once the 45 seconds have passed, the Performers will not be able to solve more puzzles. You will then be automatically moved to the next round to solve another set of puzzles in the same 45 seconds. This will continue for 10 rounds.

  • The randomly matched Decider will get to know their earnings from the lottery in the later experimental session. A new randomly selected Decider will be matched for each round of your performance.

  • Each Decider will then choose the payment for the Performer. The Decider makes the payment from a separate amount of money of ₹350. He/she has to divide this amount between his/her Performer and a randomly chosen Performer from this same experimental session. Any unassigned money will go back to us and therefore will NOT be kept by the Decider.

  • Payment Rule for Each Round

  • So the earnings for each round are as follows:

  • Finally, you will be asked some further questions.
