We now offer you the choice to play or not play a game. We are interested in how you value playing the game. For this, you have to indicate whether you prefer to play the game or to receive a fixed bonus (see table below). You should switch from playing the game to the fixed bonus when you prefer receiving the bonus to playing the game. The procedure is explained in more detail below.
Option A: You choose to play the game
If you choose to play the game, you will be paired with another participant, called Individual B. The pairing is completely anonymous. You will receive 10 points. One point is worth £0.5, so the 10 points are worth £5. You will have the opportunity to give any amount of these 10 points to Individual B. That is, you can give any of the 10 points you receive to Individual B.
For instance, you may decide to give 0 points to Individual B and keep 10 points for yourself. Or you may decide to give 10 points to Individual B and keep 0 points for yourself. You may also choose to give any other amount between 0 and 10 points to Individual B. Individual B will receive any points that you decide to give to her/him.
Importantly, Individual B will never find out about the game and about how much money (points) you decided to give to him/her. Thus, in case that you decided to give something to Individual B, Individual B will only be informed that the money (points) comes from an experiment on prolific, without further details.
Option B: You decide not to play the game (opt-out)
To measure your valuation of the game, we offer you to opt out from playing the game in exchange for a certain payment. If you decide to opt out, you will not be paired with Individual B, Individual B will not find out anything about the game and your decision and will not receive any additional money.
In order to find out your valuation of the game, we vary the payment you get when you decide to opt out. We offer you between 0.5 and 12 points for opting out, as you can see in the table below. For each row in the table below you have to indicate whether you would rather play the game or receive the amount listed in the “Option B” column. You are probably going to choose Option A (play game) in at least the first few rows, but at some point maybe switch to choosing Option B (opt out). To save time, you just need to indicate up to which row you prefer playing the game and from which row on you prefer to opt out, the other decisions will then automatically be filled in for you.
We will then randomly select one row, and the option you selected in this row will be implemented. So you have no incentive to lie on any question, because if that question gets chosen for payment then you’d end up with the option you like less.
