FREE TRAVEL CARD for young workers could be reinstated

The youth worker card – which gave workers under the age of 30 the possibility to use public transportation for free during short term work contracts – was instated by the Steel party four years ago and abolished by the Copper party.

During the budget negotiations with the government in 2015, Steel pushed through the initiative on a trial basis, which allowed young workers to use public transportation for free if their place of work was outside of walking distance.

When the new majority consisting of the Copper party and Iron party took power, the initiative was dropped. Now there is hope it will be reinstated:

“It was a popular reform,” says regional councilman Mario Ferrari (Copper party). But the youth worker card was not as popular with transportation advisor Giovanni Russoson (Iron party), despite the overall economic gain of the project.

“This project is a waste of government money. It might help a few ladies take on a part time job, but it won’t give anything of value,” he said.

Mario Ferrari (Copper party) remains optimistic, citing the benefit of the project to young men who have wives and families to support.

The Steel party say they expect the reforms the party has made with the government will continue, including the reinstatement of the youth worker card.
