Note: Careless responding may result in forfeiting compensation. Careless responding includes leaving too many questions blank or repeating one of the three problem words instead of choosing a fourth word, among other things.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to look at some factors that affect learning in different conditions. Some factors are interacting with content, interacting with other learners, and choosing extracurricular activities. This study is designed to simulate the daily life of a student with a combination of home time and school time. The whole study should take less than 2 hours.

You are on a team of four members (including you) for this study.

You will have 6 sessions, each with simulated home time followed by simulated school time. Each session will have 4 minutes of home time, followed by school time working on your task. Each session of school time has 15 problems. Some people work faster, some slower, but you could estimate that each school time session will probably take less than 10 minutes.

For home time, you may choose to study, or to play a game, or to do nothing. You will get points for playing a game or doing nothing; these points are because playing a game or doing nothing is something people like to do. You won't see these points, but they will be added to your score automatically. However, even though you don't get points for studying, it will help you do better in school time, and you will also get points for doing better in school time.

The task you do during study time is different than the task you do in school time, but it will help you do better on the school task. You will see a word with a number, and you need to try to remember the word-number pair. You will type in the word and the number associated with it. If you spend enough time in study time, then after the pairs for that study session have been presented, you will see that the words are presented again so that you can test yourself on them.

For school time, your task is to solve word puzzles. You must find the right word for each set of words, and type it in the blank.

Note: Careless responding may result in forfeiting compensation. Careless responding includes leaving too many questions blank or repeating one of the three problem words instead of choosing a fourth word, among other things.

IMPORTANT: The answer will be a different word than the first three words.

You are on a team of four members (including you). They will be able to see your answer and you will be able to see their answers. When it's time to give your final answer, you can hover over other team members' answers and choose one of those if you want. They can also see your answers and choose one of your answers if they want. A team answer will be calculated based on how many members chose an answer. You will also get points for how accurate your team answer is.

After the 6 sessions of home and school time, you will have a 7th session like a final exam. The final exam is done individually, so you won't be able to see other team members' answers; you will have to answer on your own. The final exam is to see how many of the word puzzles you know how to solve. You will get points for correct answers.

After the final exam, you will receive a final score. This score is made up of points you get over the whole study.

You will receive compensation for giving your time to participate in this study. You can get bonus compensation depending on how many points you get.
