You just finished the first questionnaire of this research. Next, you will complete a task with another participant, with whom you are now connected via the computer network. This participant is also present in the lab at the moment, and is seated in a similar computer cubicle as you. However, during and after the task you will not get to see or communicate with this other participant. So, you will not get to know the identity of this other participant, and the other participant also doesn't know who you are. Furthermore, you cannot communicate with one another about the decisions you will make during the task.
Together with this other participant you are going to do a task via the computer. This task is called a common resource task. This common resource task consists of 3 rounds. In each of these rounds, you and the other participant have a common resource at your disposal. This common resource contains valuable points, which are worth real money (namely 1 eurocent per point, and a common resource can maximally contain 480 coins). In other words, in this task you can earn extra money (on top of the standard participation fee).
In essence, this common resource is a pot of money from which each of you can take as many points as you want. The amount of points you take in each round will be exchanged for real money after the task is finished. However, it is important to know that if the two of you together take more points than there are available in the common resource, the resource is overused, and both of you will earn zero points in that round. In other words, it is good for your own earnings to take as many points as you want from the common resource. However, if you and the other participant take more than there is available in the common resource (which means that the common resource is overused), each of you will earn zero points in that round.
The size of the common resource
The three rounds of the task all have the same rules described above, so the rounds are very similar in that respect. That is, in each round you can keep the number of points you took, unless the common resource has been overused. Importantly, the difference between the three rounds lies in the size of the common resource. In other words, the size of the common resource may differ between the three rounds. At the beginning of each round you will be informed how many points there are available in the common resource, after which you can decide how many points you want to take in that round. The other participant will receive the same information as you, and will also determine how many points he/she will take in each round.
After all three rounds are finished, the computer will calculate how many points each of you has earned in the three rounds. This outcome will than be shared with you on the computer screen, after which you will be paid.
