Section 2: Instructions

In this game you will be playing with the partner that has been shown to you in the last page.

Each participant in the group is given {{ Constants.endowment }} (1 Point = 0.01 USD). The group has the opportunity to undertake a joint project. Each participant in the group decides how much she or he is going to contribute to the project. Contribution could be any integer from 0 to {{ Constants.endowment }}.

The computer will take the minimum from both contributions and substract it from your initial endowment.

The earnings from the project will be calculated as follows:

  1. The contributions of all {{ Constants.players_per_group }} participants are added up: The "Total Contribution"
  2. The "Common Project Earnings" will be determined by a random factor. Player 2 will throw a dice:
    1. If he or she gets a 1 or a 2, the Common Project Earnings will be 0 and players' contributions will be lost
    2. If he or she gets any number other than 1 or 2, the Common Project Earnings will be 3 times the Total Contribution
    3. You better hope Player 2 gets lucky!

  3. The Common Project Earnings will be divided evenly amongst participants
  4. Participant's payoffs will be determined

Payoffs:

Good Luck Scenario:

Participant 's Payoff = (Total Contribution) * 1.5 + Amount not Contributed to the Common Project

Bad Luck Scenario:

Participant 's Payoff = Amount not Contributed to the Common Project

Example 1:

Let's assume that Player 1 contributes 9 Points and Player 2 contributes 10 Points.

  1. Player 2 gets 1 Point back to make both contributions equal. Total Contribution is 18.
  2. Player 2 throws the dice and gets a 5.
  3. Total Contribution is multiplied by 3 and Common Project Earnings are 54
  4. Participant Payment = Common Project Earnings/2 (27) + Amount Not Contributed (1) = 28

Example 2:

Let's assume that Player 1 contributes 9 Points and Player 2 contributes 10 Points.

  1. Player 2 gets 1 Point back to make both contributions equal. Total Contribution is 18.
  2. Player 2 throws the dice and gets a 2.
  3. The Common Project Earnings and Participant's contributions are lost
  4. Participant Payment = Amount Not Contributed= 1

Example 3:

Let's assume that Player 1 contributes 1 Point and Player 2 contributes 2 Points.

  1. Player 2 gets 1 Point back to make both contributions equal. Total Contribution is 2.
  2. Player 2 throws the dice and gets a 5.
  3. Total Contribution is multiplied by 3 and Common Project Earnings are 6
  4. Participant Payment = Common Project Earnings/2 (3) + Amount Not Contributed (9) = 12

Example 4:

Let's assume that Player 1 contributes 1 Point and Player 2 contributes 2 Points.

  1. Player 2 gets 1 Point back to make both contributions equal. Total Contribution is 2.
  2. Player 2 throws the dice and gets a 2.
  3. The Common Project Earnings and Participant's contributions are lost
  4. Participant Payment = Amount Not Contributed= 9

Notice the trade-off in your decision. The more you contribute, the more you can win depending on Player's 2 luck. Remember 1 Point = 0.01 USD
