Welcome to the karma interaction!
In many Asian traditions, karma is symbolized by the lotus flower and represents the idea that your actions today will have consequences for tomorrow.
Inspired by this, the karma interaction is a new priority scheme that is meant to provide fair access to shared resources. In every round, you compete with a randomly matched opponent over prioritized access to a shared resource that only one of you can receive. Everyone gets karma points, and in every round both you and your opponent place a sealed karma bid. The highest bidder succeeds in getting prioritized access to the shared resource but loses karma in return. The lowest bidder does not get prioritized access but gains karma for future rounds.
We live in a world of finite shared resources, examples of which are abundant in our daily lives. One such example could be a priority lane in the freeway that is kept free of congestion to get commuters to work faster during the rush hour. In this context, the karma interaction could be thought of as a fair way to regulate access to the priority lane since not everybody can get in it.
But beware! You do not always have the same need for the shared resource. Some days you have a more urgent need, for example, you are late for an important meeting, other days you are more relaxed. Your urgency to get prioritized access changes randomly every day. Because you will eventually run out of karma if you keep on getting prioritized access, you must learn to spend your karma wisely!
