You and 4 other individuals are independently deciding whether or not you would like to travel to destination X. Each of you prefer your vacation spot not to be crowded, hence your payoff (that is your enjoyment from the trip) is decreasing in the number of other players that decide to go.
Moreover, there is an outbreak of a serious disease (i.e. SARS, Zika) at your destination. Naturally, you do not want to get sick and hence your payoffs will be decreasing with the likelihood that you contract the disease. While neither you nor the other participants know for sure how likely it is that you contract the disease, you will see a private signal of your likelihood to stay healthy and your expected payoffs based on your private signal. Your signal may or may not be identical to what other participants receive, as every player's signal is randomly drawn from the interval [T - {{ epsilon }}, T + {{ epsilon }}], where T denotes the true likelihood of staying healthy. For example, if the true likelihood that you will stay healthy is 95%, you as well as the other players will receive signals of either 94, 95 or 96. All values in this interval are equally likely to be selected.
Your signal for this round is that you will not contract the disease with probability {{ signal }}%.
The table below shows your payoffs (in points), depending on how many other players decide to go, if you decide to travel and if you do not go. The payoffs in this table are based on your individual signal, your actual payoffs may be slightly higher or lower (depending on whether your signal was too low, too high, or correct).
| Number of other players going | Payoff if you go | Payoff if you do not go |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | {{ signal_payoff }} | {{ Constants.home }} |
| 1 | {{ signal_payoff_1 }} | {{ Constants.home }} |
| 2 | {{ signal_payoff_2 }} | {{ Constants.home }} |
| 3 | {{ signal_payoff_3 }} | {{ Constants.home }} |
| 4 | {{ signal_payoff_4 }} | {{ Constants.home }} |
There will be 20 rounds of this game with varying signals about the probability of contracting the disease. At the end of the experiment, 3 rounds will be selected at random, and any points earned in these 3 randomly selected rounds will be converted to monetary payoffs. The conversion will be 1 point = $0.025. You will be paid your earnings from the game plus $5 for your participation at the end of the session.
