Introduction
Welcome to the study. This is an experiment funded by SSHRC Institutional Grants and the International
Foundation for Research in Experimental Economics to study decision making.
For showing up on time, you will receive $5 CAD. You will also receive additional earnings.
The exact amount will depend on outcomes in today’s experiment. All earnings that you make will
be in “experimental dollars”.
At the end of the experiment, we will pay you $0.05 (5 cents) in cash for every experimental dollar
earned in your final outcome (equivalently, $1 for every 20 experimental dollars earned).
Today’s session will take about an hour. Please work on your own and avoid communicating with other participants during the experiment.
Decisions and Payoffs
This decision-making experiment will last for three rounds,
and each round will consist of two stages. At the beginning of each round, you will be matched
with two other participants, randomly selected from this room, to form a group of three. You will
remain in this group of three people for both stages in each round. The group will reform with different
at the beginning of each new round. The identities of group members will not be revealed to anyone.
In the first stage of each round, you will receive some experimental
dollars and then vote on your preference for redistributing the experimental dollars in your group.
In the second stage of each round, you will play a math game—you will see how the game works through
a practice round—that will earn you some experimental dollars, and then once again you will vote on
your preference for redistributing the experimental dollars. The computer will randomly draw one of
the two stages in each of the three rounds to contribute to your experimental dollars. Your final
earnings from this part of the experiment will be the total experimental dollars from these three randomly
drawn stages. This amount will be added to your experimental dollars from the practice round and
converted to cash according to the rate of 1 experimental dollar equal to $0.05 CAD. Your final
earnings along with the $5 CAD show-up compensation will be paid to you in cash in private.
