The purpose of this research is to study how people answer certain numerical questions. We appreciate your participation.
In this study, you will be given information about a hypothetical situation and asked to answer one numerical question about this hypothetical situation.
The time it takes to answer the numerical question can be quite different for different people. However, there will be a time limit of 4 minutes to answer the question on the next page. These 4 minutes have not started yet, but will only be activated as soon as you arrive on the next page.
You will receive a base payment of £0.40 for participating in this study. In addition to the base payment, you can receive a bonus payment depending on the accuracy of your answer to the numerical question. If your answer is fully correct, you will receiver a bonus payment of £0.60, so that your total earnings for your participation will be £1.00. If your answer is relatively close to the correct answer, you will still receive a (smaller) bonus payment, but if your answer is too far away from the correct answer, you will receive no bonus payment.
For example, if your answer deviates from the correct answer by 2000, your bonus payment will be £0.30, but if your answer differs from the correct answer by more than 4000, your bonus payment will be £0. The specific formula for the calcualtion of your bonus payment is 0.6 × max[0, 1-|Δ|/4000], where Δ is the difference between your answer and the correct answer.
Your base payment and possible bonus payment will be distributed separately via Prolific within one week. Please feel free to contact us using the contact information below if you have any questions about payments. A summary of your payments will be displayed at the end of the study. You may save that page for your records.
