The purpose of this study:

The purpose of this study is to further understand how individuals make economically relevant decisions. The study is being conducted by Prof. Jin Sohn and PhD candidates Lia Flores and Rachel Mannahan.

Participation and withdrawal:

Participation in this study is completely voluntary and you are free to withdraw from this study at any time without prejudice or penalty. This consent form contains important information about this study and what to expect if you decide to participate. Please consider the information carefully. Feel free to ask questions before making your decision whether to participate. If you wish to withdraw, simply stop completing the task and close your browser. If you do withdraw from the study, the materials that you have completed to that point will be deleted and will not be included in the study. Moreover, any decisions you have made until that point will carry no consequences to you or other participants in this study.

What is involved?

We will present you with one task which may carry financial consequences to you and, when applicable, to the other participants taking part in this study. Likewise, decisions taken by other participants may affect your earnings. Approximately 20 participants will be enrolled in this study. Instructions are provided with detail at the beginning of the task. Participation in this study will take approximately 5 minutes. You will be paid £0.50 for completing the study, and possibly more depending on your decisions.

Note that going over the time limit may exclude you from the study. However, enough time is allocated per page for the experiment to run smoothly.

What is involved?

We will present you with a series of tasks which may carry financial consequences to you and, when applicable, to the other members of your group taking part in this study. Likewise, decisions taken by other members of your group may affect your earnings. Approximately 500 participants will be enrolled in this study. There are 4 PARTS and instructions to each PART are provided with detail at the beginning of each. The study ends with a short survey and final comments. Participation in this study will take approximately 27 minutes. You will be paid £2.7 for completing the study, and possibly more depending on your decisions.

Time and attention:

Note that going over the time limit may exclude you from the study. However, enough time is allocated per page for the experiment to run smoothly. Additionally, there is a minimum attention requirement on an explicit "Comprehension Questions" page. If you fail to answer these comprehension questions correctly for the third time, you will be excluded from the study. Both the time counter and the attention requirement are displayed when applicable.

Participation in this study should involve no physical or mental discomfort, and no risks beyond those of everyday living. Confidentiality and security of data:

Prolific will maintain a record of your personal information that connects you to this study. According to Prolific's data protection policy, researchers do not have access to personal data, only anonymized demographic data. That is, any data accessed by the researchers in this study cannot be linked to you. The data you provide will be used for the specific research purposes of this study, i.e. the statistical analysis of your decisions. The anonymized data will be stored securely and may be shared with other researchers for scientific purposes, potentially including future research. The information that you provide in the study will be handled confidentially. However, there may be circumstances where this information must be released or shared as required by law. The University of Arizona Institutional Review Board may review the research records for monitoring purposes.
