The purpose of the study

The purpose of this study is to understand how people make decisions in interactions with others. This study is being conducted by Prof. Kim Peters at the University of Exeter and is sponsored by the (US) Department of Defense through an award to the Centre for Open Science.

Participation and withdrawal

Participation in this study is completely voluntary and you are free to withdraw from this study at any time without prejudice or penalty. If you wish to withdraw, simply stop completing the task and close your browser. If you do withdraw from the study, the materials that you have completed to that point will be deleted and will not be included in the study.

What is involved?

If you take part, you will be asked to make decisions as part of a group with 3 other individuals who have been recruited with you in real time. Specifically, you will be given some points, and asked how many you would like to allocate to a private account that you keep, and how many you would like to allocate to a shared group account that may earn you a bonus. After you make this decision, you will be asked to respond to some questions about why you made the decision that you did. You will repeat this process 4 times in total. After this, you will be asked to provide some demographic information.

Benefits

You will be paid £3.00 for completing the study. You will also be paid a bonus on the basis of your earnings from one of the four decisions that you make. The size of this bonus will be determined by your own decision as well as the decisions of your other group members. If you would like to receive a summary of the research findings, please contact Kim Peters on the details provided below.

Risks

Participation in this study should involve no physical or mental discomfort, and no risks beyond those of everyday living. If, however, you should find any question or procedure to be invasive, you are free to omit answering or participating in that aspect of the study.

Confidentiality and security of data

All data collected in this study will be stored confidentially. All data is anonymous and cannot be linked to you. The data you provide will only be used for the specific research purposes of this study, i.e. the statistical analysis of your decisions. De-identified (anonymous) versions of your data will be shared publicly on the Open Science Framework (http://osf.io) upon completion of the project. Authorised representatives from the Department of Defense Human Research Protection program may review and / or obtain identifiable information related to your participation in this research study as part of their responsibility to protect human research subject volunteers.

Ethics Clearance and Contacts

This study has been cleared in accordance with the ethical review processes of the University of Exeter Business School. You are free to discuss your participation with project staff (K.O.Peters2@Exeter.ac.uk). Alternatively, you may leave a message with the Research Team at the University of Exeter ( business-school-research-office@exeter.ac.uk).

By checking on the box below and proceeding with the experiment, you provide consent that you understand the information provided and agree to participate in this study. You acknowledge that your participation is voluntary, and that you may withdraw at any time.
