Welcome to this experiment. This experiment studies the interaction of decisions made by multiple individuals. In the following one hour or so, you will participate in 5 practice and 10 official rounds of decision making. The payment you will receive from this experiment will depend on the decisions you make.

{% if subsession.num_FR > 0 %}

There are three roles—S, True R, and False R—in the experiment today. The role assignment for the practice rounds will be explained later. At the beginning of the official rounds of the experiment, {{ wnum_pairs }} participants will be randomly assigned the role of S, another {{ wnum_pairs }} the role of True R, and the rest ({{ wnum_FR }} people) the role of False R. Your role will remain fixed throughout the 10 official rounds of the experiment. At the beginning of the 1st official round, you will be informed whether your role is S or not. If you are not S, then the screen says that your role is R, but no further information about whether you are True R or False R will be provided during the decision making. Thus, the only thing you know is that the chances are {{ TR_prob }}-and-{{ FR_prob }} that you are True R or False R.

Whether you are True R or False R will be revealed only after all decisions are made in the 10th official round.

In each round, one S and one True R will be randomly paired to form a group of two and make decisions that will affect their rewards in the round. They will be randomly reshuffled after each round to form new groups. Participants whose role is False R will belong to a single person group (but cannot tell they are not matched).

Environment

Consider two treasure hunters S and R who are poisoned in the middle of their adventure. Luckily, they have the recipe to make one antidote. According to the recipe,

  1. A certain kind of toxic herbal extract is the main ingredient.
  2. R has 10 grams of the herbal extract. S does not have any.
  3. The exact amount of the herbal extract needed to make a perfect antidote depends on
    1. The seriousness of the poison and
    2. Whether the poison is TYPE 0 or TYPE 1.
  4. The situation of S is more serious than that of R, and thus S always needs {{ conflict }} grams more of the herbal extract than R regardless of whether the poison is TYPE 0 or TYPE 1.
  5. If the poison is TYPE 0,
    1. R does not need any herbal extract.
    2. That means, S needs {{ conflict }} grams.
  6. If the poison is TYPE 1,
    1. R needs all 10 grams of the herbal extract.
    2. That means, S needs {{ conflictplus10 }} grams.

Environment (Continued)

  1. Putting in too little or too much of the herbal extract will result in pain (and thus, a loss in your points). The larger the difference between the exact amount needed and the actual amount taken, the more pain one will suffer. Precisely, your point becomes
    300 – [The exact amount needed – The actual amount taken]² for S
    and
    300 – 3 × [The exact amount needed – The actual amount taken]² for R

    The following table illustrates the possible points for each player in different scenarios.

    If the poison is Points for R Points for S
    TYPE 0
    ({{ typeO_prob }}%)
      TYPE 1
    ({{ typeI_prob }}%)
    TYPE 0
    ({{ typeO_prob }}%)
      TYPE 1
    ({{ typeI_prob }}%)

  2. They know that the poison is TYPE 0 with {{ typeO_prob }}% chance and TYPE 1 with {{ typeI_prob }}% chance.
  3. S has a pair of magic glasses that tell him privately whether the poison is TYPE 0 or TYPE 1.

Antidote Game

They have time and ingredients to make only one bowl of antidote to share. The game unfolds as follows:

Antidote Game (Continued)

{% if subsession.num_FR > 0 %} {% else %} {% endif %}

At the end of the 10th round, the computer will {% if subsession.num_FR > 0 %} reveal your role (S, True R, and False R), and{% endif %} provide feedback for each of the 10 rounds including

  1. whether the poison is TYPE 0 or TYPE 1,
  2. the exact amount of herbal extract you needed to take,
  3. the actual amount you took, and
  4. your earnings in points.

Note that the feedback will be provided only at the end of the last round, but not of other rounds.

Monetary Payment

The computer randomly selects 1 round out of the 10 official rounds to calculate your cash payment. So, it is in your best interest to take each round equally seriously. The point you earned in the selected round will be translated into HKD according to the exchange rate of 1 point = {% if session.real_world_currency_per_point == 1%}1{%else%}{{ session.real_world_currency_per_point }}{%endif%} HKD. Your total payment in HKD will be your earnings in the selected round plus an HKD {{ participation_fee }} show-up fee.

After the 10th round, the experiment will be over. You will be instructed to fill in the receipt for your payment. The amount you earn will be paid electronically via the HKUST Autopayment System to the bank account you provide to the Student Information System (SIS). The auto-payment will be arranged by the Finance Office of HKUST and takes about 3 weeks.

Five Practice Rounds

Before we start the experiment for real, we will have a short “Comprehension Quiz”. Then you will participate in FIVE practice rounds. The practice rounds are part of the instructions and not relevant to your payment. Their objective is to get you familiar with the computer interface and the flow of the decisions in each round. Once the practice rounds are over, the computer will tell you “The official rounds begin now!”

{% if subsession.num_FR > 0 %}

One crucial difference between the practice and official rounds is that your role will be randomly determined for each practice round and the chosen role will be revealed at the end of every practice round. When the official rounds begin, however, your role will be randomly chosen at the beginning of the 1st official round and fixed thereafter. Moreover, you will not know whether you are True R or False R during your decision making for the official rounds. Also, information feedback about what has happened in a practice round will be provided at the end of the practice round, while no such feedback will be provided at the end of official rounds except for the 10th round.
