Welcome!

You will take control of a company that is trying to maximise their profits by using a data sharing platform. The more profit the company makes the more likely you will get a premium. Please read the information on this page carefully because your comprehension will be tested. You are allowed to use pen and paper to take notes anytime!

The Setting

You and two other companies (also controlled by humans), in the future called "rivals", may share data with each other, you're each given a 100 data units. The underlying mechanics on revenue generation are exactly the same for all rivals. You will play 7 rounds, every round is a clean slate, no profit or data is carried over.

The Decision

You can decide to share any % of your data with each of your rivals. This means that you can send 100% to rival 1 AND 100 % to rival 2. You have to make this decision simultaneously without any form of communication.

The Consequences

You and your rivals make extra revenue for every unit of data received in the sharing decision. All units of data you have access to will be added up and will be multiplied by a certain revenue factor giving you your base revenue.

Base revenue = (Your data + data shared with you) * revenue factor

The average of your rival's base revenue multiplied by a competition factor will be deducted from your base revenue giving you your profit.

Profit = Base revenue – competition factor * average base revenue of rivals

Before each round, you will have the opportunity to quickly calculate your expected profit based on your assumptions of how you and your rivals will behave in a profit calculator. After you and the rivals make your decision, you will be shown the profit all of you have earned, as well as all data sharing decisions made. Starting from round 2, you can also load the results of the previous round into the profit calculator.

The Scenarios

(1) You may face scenarios where you and your rivals have different revenue factors, so that for the same amount of data, you will make different revenues.
(2) Some markets are more competitive than others. You may be grouped in a market where the competition factor will be lower, and you feel the effect of the rivals’ profit less or in a market where the competition factor will be higher, and you feel the effect of the rivals' profit much more Therefore, it in the latter case, it is much riskier to share data compared to a scenario with a low competition factor. You will be informed of these scenarios.

Your Strategy

Any amount of data you share is unfavorable to your profit as part of the others' base revenue will be deducted from your own results. However, in every environment you may face, you can achieve higher profits if you get your rivals to share data with you.

Your payout

Your participation fee is 5€. On top of the participation fee you may earn a premium. Your profit made in a randomly selected round will be selected, divided by 10, rounded to the next whole number and converted to euros. If in the selected round you made a loss, your premium is 0€. As such, you're incentivised to to your best in every round.
