“Decision Making in an Economic Task” (REB #19-11-039)
You are being invited to participate in a research study conducted by Aleta Pleasant (apleasan@uoguelph.ca) a master’s student from the department of psychology at The University of Guelph. This project is under the supervision of Dr. Patrick Barclay (barclayp@uoguelph.ca).
Purpose of the Study: The purpose of the study is to better understand decision making during an economic task, it should take approximately 2 minutes total. This research is funded by a research grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
Procedure:
Before the Task: You will read a brief set of instructions to outline the rules of the task.
During the Task: You will play a short decision making task. In each round of the task you will respond to a binary question. Depending on your response, this will result in different monetary payoffs.
Potential Risks and Discomfort: It is possible that participation in the study may induce feelings of distrust or tension. Additionally, you may be disappointed by the outcomes and your resultant payoffs. However, these discomforts are not expected to go above and beyond what an individual would experience in day to day life. If at any time you do not wish to continue participating in the study, you have the right to withdraw.
Benefits to Participants and Society: There are no direct benefits from participation, other than the monetary incentives (see below).
Incentives: You will receive $.17 base pay for taking part in the task with the opportunity to earn extra money (0¢ - .30¢) throughout the task depending on your decisions.
Confidentiality: Your Prolific ID will be used only to distribute compensation for the study, it will not be connected to the data from the task. Data from this task will be used for a master’s thesis, as well as publication in academic journals. Your data will be anonymous and stored in an encrypted file and may also be made available online through open access. Raw data from this study will be made publicly available as a condition for publication. Contact information for the researchers is available in this form and at the end of the study if you would like to request the results of the study. Please note that confidentiality cannot be guaranteed while data are in transit over the internet.
Participation and Withdrawal: You may choose to participate in this study or not. If you choose to participate you may exercise your right to leave at any point without consequence, however if you leave prior to completion you will not be compensated. You can withdraw by pressing return or exiting the window. If there are questions in the exit survey you do not wish to answer you may leave them blank. Once data has been collected it may not be removed as it will not be linked to any identifiers and the researcher will have no way of knowing which data belongs to you.
Rights of Research Participants: This project has been reviewed by the University of Guelph Research Ethics Board for compliance with federal guidelines for research involving human participants.
