LETTER OF INFORMATION & CONSENT FORM
You are being asked to be a volunteer in a research study. This is a study being conducted by Adam Vitalis, Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada; Jordan Bable, Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada; Jason Kuang, Associate Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, United States; and Jonathan Kugel, Assistant Professor at Christopher Newport University, United States.
This is the second part of a two-part study. The first part entailed completing a survey. You have been invited to this second part of the study because your responses in the first part met the requirements for participation in the current study. We will be linking responses from this survey to the first survey.
In this second part of the study, you will be asked to complete an investing task in an online survey format through oTree, where you will be presented with a business case that describes a hypothetical company. You will be asked to make judgments based on the information in the case as well as decisions made by other participants that will be unknown to you. You will also be asked to complete a questionnaire at the conclusion of the study. The entire duration of the second part of the study is expected to take approximately 30 minutes of your time, although you can take as long as you would like.
Your identity will be confidential. We will use a coding system that helps us link the two data sets and allows us to contact you. However, your personal information will not be maintained with your results. This data will be maintained and shared between the researchers at the University of Waterloo, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Christopher Newport University on password protected drives. Data for this project will be maintained for at least 15 years, or as required for publication purposes, and then destroyed. Your individual identity will not be disclosed at any time.
Your participation in this study will involve completing an online survey operated by oTree. When information is transmitted over the internet, privacy cannot be guaranteed. There is always a risk your responses may be intercepted by a third party (e.g., government agencies, hackers). oTree temporarily collects your [company/contributor] ID and computer IP address to avoid duplicate responses in the dataset but will not maintain information that could identify you personally.
The risks involved with participating in this experiment are no greater than those involved in daily activities, such as participating in normal classroom activities. While there are no direct benefits from participating in the experiment, prior studies’ participants have indicated they have enjoyed the experience. This research will hopefully lead to a better understanding of how individuals make decisions in a business setting. Thus, we hope that what we learn will have implications for managers and help inform companies on how to structure management decision processes.
Your participation in this study is voluntary – you can refuse to answer any question, and you can terminate your participation at any time. If you end early, you will receive the minimum remuneration outlined below of $4.00.
Your remuneration on this second part includes a $4 appreciation for participating in this second part of the study. You will also receive up to an additional $2 (for a potential total of $6), depending on the decisions that you make in this second portion of the study. Your remuneration will be paid via your Prolific account at the completion of the second session and after completing a post-experiment questionnaire to collect demographic information and other experiment relevant information. If you terminate the session early, you will receive only the $4 “show-up” fee. The amount received is taxable. It is your responsibility to report this amount for income tax purposes. You will also have the opportunity to direct a portion of your remuneration to the Trees for the Future charity based on your decisions in the study.
Once all the data are collected and analyzed for this project, we plan on sharing this information with the research community through seminars, conferences, presentations, and journal articles. Should you have any questions about the study, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Vitalis by email or telephone as noted above. You can look on Dr. Vitalis’ SSRN research page (https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/cf_dev/AbsByAuth.cfm?per_id=1036271) periodically. When the manuscript has been written based on this data, we will include it here.
This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through a University of Waterloo Research Ethics Board (REB # 42389).
