At the beginning of each game, you will be matched with a random person, to form a team of two. For each game your team will be playing against one of the other teams and that team will be the opponent of your team. Note that you will not learn who your teammate or your opponents are, neither during nor after today’s session. Likewise, neither your teammate nor your opponents will learn about your identity.
This tournament consists of 10 games, and each game consists of 4 rounds. In each game your team and your opponents will be competing for a cash prize. Whichever team earns more points will be the winner.
Each round consists of the following sequence of events. At the beginning of each round, you and your teammate each receive a randomly and independently drawn integer number from 1 to 5 inclusive. This number will be revealed after you make your decision, that is, your teammate will not see your number and his/her number, and you will not see your number and your teammate’s number until you make your decision.
You and your teammate must each decide separately between one of two actions: “A” or “B”. Your number, your action, your teammate’s number, and your teammate’s action will determine your points in the following way.
The tables below summarize the payoff structure.
| Your teammate | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| A | B | ||
| You | A | x/{{ Constants.divider_both_enter }} | x |
| B | {{ Constants.payoff_exit }} | {{ Constants.payoff_exit }} | |
| Your teammate | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| A | B | ||
| You | A | y/{{ Constants.divider_both_enter }} | 0 |
| B | y | {{ Constants.payoff_exit }} | |
Suppose you receive a number, x, and your teammate receives a number, y. The points for each of the given pair of decisions are indicated in the tables above. The table on the left refers to your points; the table on the right is your teammate’s points. After you and your teammate have both made your decisions, you will see your number, the amount of points you earned, your teammate’s number and his/her decision. You and your opposing team will do the exact same activity for 4 rounds in each game.
At the end of each game, the winning team and the individual competition winner will be determined.
As a team, you will be competing for a cash prize against the opposing team. If your team earned more points together than your opposing team, you and your teammate will each receive a $10 cash prize. If your team earned less points together than your opposing team, you and your teammate will receive $0. In the case of a tie, the ranking among the teams with equal total points will be determined randomly. Likewise, your opposing team will have the chance to win the team competition, in exactly the same way.
As an individual, you will be competing for a cash prize against your teammate. In addition to the team competition cash prize, you will receive an individual competition cash prize. If you earned more points than your teammate, you will receive a $10 cash prize. If you earned less points than your teammate, you will receive $0. In the case of a tie, the ranking between you and your teammate with equal total points will be determined randomly. Likewise, your teammate and your opposing team will have the chance to win the individual competition, in exactly the same way.
