(The instructions are presented below so you can revise them before playing another practice round.)
{{ endif }}You will play a total of {{ C.NUM_ROUNDS }} rounds. On each round you are presented with {{ C.BOXES }} boxes. See below what these boxes look like.
Your task is to start opening the boxes one by one. Each box is either a gain box or a loss box. Gain boxes increase your points for that round, whereas loss boxes decrease your points. Most boxes are gain boxes and there are only a few loss boxes.
😀 gain box
😨 loss box
Below you will see an example of the boxes that are all opened. The loss boxes are randomly allocated among all the boxes.
At the start of the round, you will not see the contents of any of the boxes. You will only know whether a box is a gain box or a loss box once you open it.
Your task is to open as many boxes as you wish, keeping in mind that any box you open may be a loss box. The loss boxes are randomly located within all the boxes, and the location of the loss boxes changes from round to another. There can be one, two, or three loss boxes within the gain boxes.
You open boxes by swiping left and stop opening by swiping right (you will learn this during the practice rounds).
You can stop opening the boxes at any time within a round. If you open a loss box, the round ends.
Gain boxes give you different amounts of points. On each round, the gain boxes can be valued 10, 20, or 30 points. If you open, say, five gain boxes that are valued 20 points each, that means your gains for that round are 100 points.
Loss boxes, too, have different values attached to them, and they mean the amount of points you can lose from your collected gains points within a round. On each round, the loss boxes can be valued 250, 500, or 750 points, meaning e.g. that you may lose up to 250 points if you open a loss box with value 250 points.
The best way to be successful in this task is to open as many gain boxes as you can but stop (swipe right) before opening loss boxes.
Example: If you have opened 6 gain boxes that are 20 points each, then your gains are 120 points, but if you then open a loss box of any loss value after these 6 gain boxes, all your gained points will be wiped away. On the other hand, if you have opened 20 gain boxes that are 20 points each, your gains will be 400 points and then opening a loss box of 250 points will leave you with 150 total points for that round.
When you are done with the study, two rounds are randomly chosen that determine your monetary bonus payments, and summed up. These points are then divided by 100 to indicate your reward in GBP. For example, if your round points are 400 and 700 points, then that means 1100 total points and £11 in bonus payments.
Rounds 1 and 2 of the study are practice rounds and will not count towards your final reward.
The next page and each page before each new round will provide details regarding that round.
{{ if roundi < 3 }}In this game your task is to open boxes with ice cream 🍦 in them. You should aim to open as many ice cream boxes as you wish!
However, there are also boxes with birds 🐦 in them, that will eat your ice creams. There may be birds hiding in 1, 2, or 3 boxes within all the {{ C.BOXES }} boxes.
For each box, your decision is to either open the box and continue to the next box, or stop opening the boxes.
