This is a study on decision-making in which you will earn cash. The money that you earn depends partly on the decisions that you make and another participant's decision, who has been randomly chosen and will be associated with you. Similarly, the money earned by your associated participant will depend on their decision and yours.
In addition, your decision and your associated participant’s decision will determine the amount of money we will donate to an NGO. The main goal of the NGO is to promote sustainable forestry that balances the needs of the environment, wildlife, and forest communities and to raise awareness about forest conservation for future generations.
There are two parts in this study: part 1 and part 2. You will be making a series of decisions both in part 1 and part 2. In part 1, there are 5 decisions rounds, and in part 2 there are 4 decisions rounds. In total you will have to make 9 decisions.
We will randomly choose ONE decision out of 9 rounds for your cash earning in this study.
At the end of the study, you will be asked to complete a post-study questionnaire.
Your earnings in this study are denominated in points, which will be exchanged at a rate of 1 point = GBP 0.08 at the end of the session. You will start with 30 points for every decision both in Part 1 and Part 2.
There are two roles in this study:
Participants in the role of Managers have two options: to directly transfer private payment to the official or not. Participants in the role of Official also have two options: to accept the private payment or reject it.
When a manager transfers 10 points of private payment and an official accepts it, there is an extra benefit of 20 points for the managers, an extra benefit of 10 points for the officials, but an extra loss of 30 points for the NGO. However, if the manager decides not to transfer: the manager, official, and NGO will receive their initial endowment.
Please refer to the following image for each decision scenario and its economic consequence.
Just a reminder, we will randomly choose ONE out of 9 decisions for your cash earning.
