Why are you here? Dr. Yang wants to invite you to take part in a study. All members of the Student Participant Pool have been asked to participate in this study. This is the only study you’ll be taking part in for this appointment. You will be compensated 1.0 credit in the SONA system for your time and will be compensated in cash based on your performance in the task described below. The purpose of this letter is to provide information required for you to make an informed decision regarding participation in this research.
Why are we conducting this study? The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of compensation on how workers interact with each other in a team setting.
How long will this study take? This study will take approximately 60 minutes of your time and this current appointment is the only visit you will be expected to make for this study.
What will happen to you in this study? If you consent to take part in this study, you will first read over the instructions for the Decision Making Task on screen at a computer workstation in Room 0388/0348/0349 of the Ivey Behavioural Lab at the Ivey Business School. The instructions are delivered via an online platform and will include some questions to ensure that the instructions have been understood. The Decision Making Task will commence once all participants have completed the instructions. This will take place on the same computer. In this study, you will be assigned into a two-person dyad and interact with another participant through the computer. You will make resource allocation decisions in an organizational setting. At the end of the task, you will answer some rating-type questions about your decision-making process. Your compensation, beyond the guaranteed SONA system credit, will be based on the decisions you and the other participant in the dyad made.
Your responses will be collected through a secure cloud-based server called Heroku. Heroku’s server is located in the U.S. and the Heroku privacy policy can be read here: https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/security-privacy-compliance . Please note that no data transmission over the internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure.What are the risks and harms of participating in this study? There are no known or anticipated risks of discomforts associated with participation in this study.
Will the study help you? There is no guarantee that you will receive any personal benefit from taking part in this study. However, the study may help researchers and managers design better incentive systems that build trust and promote cooperation in organizations.
Can you choose to leave the study? If you decide to withdraw from the study, you have the right to request withdrawal of information collected about you. If you wish to have your information removed please let the lab manager know, by providing your SONA Identity Code. While participants can request the withdrawal of their information, a record of their participation such as consent form must be kept.
Who will see the information that you give? The researchers will keep any information collected as part of this study in a secure and confidential location for a minimum of 7 years. Your study data will only be identified by SONA Identity Code which is a five-digit number for tracking your course research credit. The master list linking your SONA Identity Code with your identifiable information is kept by the Ivey Behavioural Lab Manager in a secure location separate from your study data. Delegated institutional representatives of Western University’s and its Non-Medical Research Ethics Board may require access to your study-related records to monitor the conduct of the research in accordance with regulatory requirements. The outcomes of these surveys may be disseminated in journal publications. The anonymized study data may also be made available on open access platforms (e.g. osf.io), to journals and/or other researchers for replication studies and/or to answer related research questions.
Will you receive any compensation for taking part in this study? In general, credits are granted, through SONA, as 0.5 credit for timeslots of approximately 30 minutes and 1.0 credit for timeslots of approximately 60 minutes. To fulfill your research participation for this current timeslot, participants will receive 1.0 research credit for approximately 60 minutes of research participation and be asked to take part in one study in this appointment.
You are automatically guaranteed the credit in the SONA system for showing up for your appointment. Additional compensation for this study is earned based on decisions you and the other participant made in the Decision Making Task. You can only receive this performance-based compensation if you complete your participation in the tasks described above. On average, participants will receive $17 for performance in the Decision Making Task, with a possible range of $11 to $23. Participants who withdraw before completing the study will still receive the course credit, but will not receive the aforementioned performance-based incentive payments.What are your rights as a participant? Your participation in this study is voluntary. You may decide not to be in this study. Even if you consent to participate you have the right to withdraw from the study at any time. If you choose not to participate or to leave the study at any time it will have no effect on your flat fee. We will give you new information that is learned during the study that might affect your decision to stay in the study. You do not waive any legal right by signing this consent form.
