KEY INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Accounting at the University of Kansas supports the practice of protection for human subjects participating in research. The following information is provided for you to decide whether you wish to participate in the present study. You may refuse to sign this form and not participate in this study. You should be aware that even if you agree to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time. If you do withdraw from this study, it will not affect your relationship with this unit, the services it may provide to you, or the University of Kansas.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the research is to understand decision making in a performance evaluation context. We plan to examine how different features of the performance evaluation process lead to different employee evaluations.
PROCEDURES
You will complete the research study in a computer laboratory. Upon entering the lab, you will sign a consent form and listen as the facilitators provide details about the study. You will then begin reading the instructions for the session on your computer and answering questions about those instructions. Once everyone has completed this instruction phase, you will move on to the task phase. In the task phase, you will receive lighting designs from five hypothetical employees. You will evaluate each design to determine whether it is below expectations, meets expectations, or exceeds expectations. After each round, you will review the submitted evaluation distribution. This process will repeat for five rounds. Afterward, you will answer a set of post-experiment questions. You will provide your payment information and receive your ClinCard with compensation at the end of the session. Each session should take about 45 minutes. There will be no follow-up.
RISKS
The content of the study and questions should cause no more discomfort than you would experience in your everyday life.
BENEFITS
Although participation may not benefit you directly, we believe that the information obtained from this study will provide the first insight into how features of the performance evaluation process can lead to different evaluation outcomes.
PAYMENT TO PARTICIPANTS
You will receive a $5 show up fee. For full participation today, you will receive, on average, an additional payment between $5 and $16, depending on the decision you make. The exact detail of both the task and compensation will be described in detail in the case. Recall that you will have the ability to withdraw from this study at any time, including after you learn details of the task and the compensation. The monetary compensation you earn will be paid through a pre-paid debit card accepted wherever MasterCard is accepted. Note that the investigators may ask for your social security number in order to comply with federal and state tax and accounting regulations. In addition to the monetary compensation, you will also receive 3 points of class credit for your participation, regardless of your performance on the task.
