Key Information

You are invited to participate in a study on Social Perception and Economic Behaviors. Our goal is to identify how make economic decisions in groups. In this study, you will be asked to make economic decisions with other players synchronously in an economic game. In addition, you will complete a short survey that include demographic characteristics and personality measures. There are NO risks or discomfort beyond those that exist in daily life; in addition to receiving a token of appreciation for your time, you will also gain some experience in participating in scientific activities.

What is this study about?

This study is conducted by Dr. Yihao Liu, Assistant Professor, School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois. This study is about group-based economic decision making. We are interested in how people make economic decisions in group such as how people decide when to cooperate with other team members in a group.

 

What does participating involve? 

This study takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. In this study, you will be asked to complete an economic game with other players. In addition, you will complete a short survey that include demographic characteristics and personality measures.

 

What do participants receive from taking part?

To thank you for your time, you will receive a token of appreciation of up to $1 for your participation, which comprised of a $0.50 fixed participation fees and performance-based earnings up to $0.50. Your payment will be in the form of cash deposited to labor account.

 

Is it mandatory that I participate? 

You have the option to not participate. Your decision to participate or decline participation in this study is completely voluntary and you have the right to terminate your participation at any time without penalty aside from losing the compensation mentioned above (i.e., up to $1). If you do not wish to complete this study, please simply close this browser. Note, you will NOT receive any fixed participant fees or performance-based earnings if you withdraw early from the study.

 

Will my study-related information be kept confidential?

We will use all reasonable efforts to keep your personal information confidential, but we cannot guarantee absolute confidentiality. However, when this research is discussed or published in scientific journals, scientific data repositories, and academic presentations, all data will be reported in aggregate and anonymously, and no one will know that you were in the study. However, laws and university rules might require us to disclose information about you. For example, if required by laws or University Policy, study information you supply may be seen or copied by the following people or groups: a) The university committee and office that reviews and approves research studies, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Office for Protection of Research Subjects; and b) University and state auditors, and Departments of the university responsible for oversight of research.

Also, your de-identified information could be used for future research without additional informed consent.

 

What are the risks and benefits to participating in this study?

There are no risks to participating beyond those that exist in daily life. Your participation will not only help us better understand how people think about heroes and villains, but also contribute to scientific and societal knowledge.
