Part 3 Instructions

There are two work periods in Part 3.

Employees

The two employees in each group who were not promoted will continue performing the Part 2 task in each of the two periods. That is, they will complete the word-creation, with 3 minutes to create words worth $0.20 per point.

Managers

Those promoted to manager will now perform a different task. The manager task is to solve math problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division. The problems will use one-digit, two-digit, or three-digit numbers and all answers will be between 0 and 100. The managers will receive 20 problems at a time and can do them in any order they prefer. If they correctly answer all 20 problems, they can advance to a new set of 20 problems. They have 3 minutes to answer as many problems as they can.

Each question answered correctly will increase manager pay by $0.15. The manager will also earn $0.04 for each point earned by the two employees in their group working on the word-creation task. Finally, the manager will earn 2% of the total pay earned by all participants in Business Unit A (including their group and the other group in the business unit).

Senior Manager

At the end of the first period in Part 3, the manager with the best performance, accounting for their group’s performance, will be promoted to a new position as senior manager for Business Unit A and oversee both groups in the Business Unit. The senior manager will still solve math problems. However, the difficulty of these problems will be much higher than before and the pay per correct answer will increase to $0.40 per point for the senior manager. The senior manager will also earn 3% of the total pay earned by all participants in Business Unit A.
