General Instructions

In this experiment, there are two bags, Bag A and Bag B. Each bag contains two chips, and the color of each chip is either red or blue. During the experiment, you will be given up to two choice tasks. These choice tasks are called the Red Choice Task and the Blue Choice Task, respectively. In each choice task, you must decide whether you want Bag A or Bag B to count for your payment. In the Red Choice Task, you will earn an additional payment if red is drawn from your selected bag. In the Blue Choice Task, you will earn an additional payment if blue is drawn from your selected bag.

Every participant will receive the Blue Choice Task first. After everyone has made their decision in the Blue Choice Task, the flip of a coin will determine if you should move on to the Red Choice Task. If the coin flip determines that you should not move on to the Red Choice Task, then you will stop there, resulting in you responding to only one of the two choice tasks. In this scenario, you would be paid for your decision in the Blue Choice Task. Alternatively, if the coin flip determines that you should move on to the Red Choice Task, then your experiment will continue, resulting in you responding to both choice tasks. In this scenario, you would be paid for your decision in the Red Choice Task only; you would not be paid for your decision in the Blue Choice Task.

Given this procedure, the flip of the coin determines how many choice tasks you will respond to and which choice task will be paid. There will be a separate coin flip for each participant. The coin flips will be conducted after the Blue Choice Task but before the Red Choice Task. If you make it to the Red Choice Task, then you know that you will be paid for your decision in the Red Choice Task. After all decisions have been made (in both choice tasks), there will be one chip drawn from each bag. You will earn an additional payment if the relevant color is drawn from the bag that you selected in your payment-relevant choice task.

To help implement this procedure in a fair and transparent manner, one of your fellow participants has been assigned the role of implementer. The implementer will flip one coin for each participant to determine which choice task counts for your payment and how many choice tasks you will receive. After all decisions have been made in both choice tasks, the implementer will then make one draw from each bag. These drawings will determine your final payment and mark the conclusion of the experiment.

In the top right corner of your screen is a small box with a letter/number. If your box contains a number, then you have been assigned the role of a participant. If your box contains the letter "i", then you have been assigned the role of the implementer.

If you have been assigned the role of implementer, please see the experimenter in the back to get instructions on how the coin flips and drawings will take place.

If you have been assigned the role of participant, please stay seated and follow along as the instructions are read aloud.
