Task (Continued)
You and all other employees will complete the same task for 9 periods. Your total compensation for the study will be based on the points you earn in all 9 periods. At the end of the study, all points will be converted to cash at a rate of 50 points = $1.00 when determining your total compensation for the study.
Your task consists of deciding how to use individual resources (expressed as points), which will affect your team’s output and your earnings for the period. For your work, you will also receive a salary of {{ if player.condition == 1 or player.condition == 3 }}10{{ else }}40{{ endif }} points each period.
You will start each of the 9 periods with 20 points that you may (in any proportion you choose) keep and/or contribute toward increasing your team’s output for the period. Any points not contributed are retained and increase individual compensation for the period. Your team’s output increases in a constant manner as the number of points contributed by any team member increases. However, the rate at which each member’s contribution increases the team’s output differs between team members.
{{ if player.condition == 1 or player.condition == 2 }}
Specifically, each team member has a randomly assigned productivity rate or multiplier (5, 7, or 9) that determines the effect on team output of any points contributed by that team member.
Each team member’s productivity rate will stay the same throughout the 9 periods of the task.
{{ else }}Specifically, each team member has a productivity rate or multiplier (5, 7, or 9) that determines the effect on team output of any points contributed by that team member. Each team member will be informed of their productivity rate at the beginning of each period.
The three productivity rates (5, 7, and 9) will rotate between team members each period. Therefore, for every three periods completed (of the 9 periods total), each team member will complete one period with a productivity rate of 5, one period with a productivity rate of 7, and one period with a productivity rate of 9.
{{ endif }}Total team output in any period equals the sum of the output generated by the points contributed by all three team members in that same period.
To illustrate, suppose each team member contributes 16 points toward increasing their team’s output in a particular period (and has the productivity rates shown below). Team output for the period would be affected as follows:
| Team member | Points contributed | × Productivity = | Increase in team output |
| Employee A | 16 | × 5 = | 80 |
| Employee B | 16 | × 7 = | 112 |
| Employee C | 16 | × 9 = | 144 |
| Total team output = | 336 | ||
Your company has set a target output of 300 points for each team to encourage higher output. Whether your team’s total output in each period meets (or exceeds) 300 points determines whether the team {{ if player.condition == 1 or player.condition == 3 }}receives a team bonus{{ else }}is subject to a team penalty{{ endif }}.
If your team’s total output in a period meets (or exceeds) the target output of 300, your team will {{ if player.condition == 1 or player.condition == 3 }}receive a bonus{{ else }} not be subject to a penalty{{ endif }} of 90 points.
If your team’s total output in a period does not meet the target output of 300, your team will {{ if player.condition == 1 or player.condition == 3 }}not receive a bonus{{ else }} be subject to a penalty{{ endif }} of 90 points.
Your team’s manager will be solely responsible for allocating any team {{ if player.condition == 1 or player.condition == 3 }}bonus{{ else }} penalty{{ endif }} between you and your other two team members in any proportion they choose.
