STUDY TITLE: Dynamic Adjustment of Human Reliance on AI Advice
You are invited to participate in a research study. This form has information to help you decide whether or not you wish to participate - please review it carefully. Your participation is voluntary. Please ask any questions you have about the study or about this form before deciding to participate. You may print or save a copy of this page for your records.
The purpose of this study is to understand how individuals make decisions when provided with advice from an artificial intelligence (AI) system. Specifically, we are studying how people adjust their level of trust in AI advice after they receive immediate feedback on whether the advice was correct or incorrect over a series of tasks.
You are eligible to participate in this study if: You are 18 years of age or older, reside in the United States, and are a registered user of the Prolific research platform. You must be able to view digital facial images clearly on a computer screen and be comfortable reading and following instructions in English.
You should not participate if: You are under 18 years of age. You should not participate if you have visual impairments that prevent you from accurately perceiving facial features in images. Additionally, since the experiment interface is optimized for desktop and laptop browsers, you should not participate if you are using a smartphone or tablet.
To determine if you are eligible: We use the pre-screening filters provided by the Prolific platform to ensure all participants meet the age and residency requirements. At the beginning of the study, you will also be asked to confirm your consent and verify that you are using a compatible device (desktop or laptop).
If you agree to participate, you will be asked to:
This study will contribute to the scientific understanding of human-AI interaction. By analyzing how individuals update their beliefs when facing AI advice and objective feedback, the results may help in designing more effective and trustworthy AI assistant systems for professional and everyday decision-making environments. You are not expected to directly benefit from participation in the study.
Participating in this study is completely voluntary. You may choose not to take part in the study or to stop participating at any time, for any reason, without penalty or negative consequences.
If you withdraw from the study early: You may do so by closing your browser window. No further action is required on your part. However, you will forfeit your fixed payment and bonus.
We may end your participation in the study if: Your responses suggest that you are not following the instructions or you exit the webpage before the tasks are fully finished. If you withdraw or are withdrawn from the study early, then we will not keep information about you that is already collected.
No information that could be used to identify you will be recorded or linked with the research data collected as a part of this study.
Future Use of Data: Information about you collected for this study may be shared with other researchers, used for other research studies, or placed in a data repository. These studies may be similar to this study or completely different. All information that could identify you will be removed before sharing the data or using it for other research studies. We will not ask you for additional permission before sharing the information.
