H ollywood star Johnny Depp threw glass bottles at Amber Heard “like grenades” when she tried to stop him from drinking, she told the High Court.

Heard claimed the incident began when she snatched a bottle of liquor from the actor’s hand and smashed it on the floor between them.

She said she was trying to “save his life”, but believes her actions sent Depp into a spiral of violence.

“I regret I did that, I was so upset, but I think it snapped something in him”, she said. “He reached for bottles on the counter – he used them like grenades, bombs, throwing them at me one after the other after the other.

“I felt glass breaking behind me, I retreated more into the bar and he didn’t stop. I was too scared to look behind me, I felt glass hitting the back of my arms.

“I looked at him as he threw one bottle after the other. He threw all the bottles that were within reach, all with the exception of one.”

Heard, 34, said a celebratory magnum of wine was left intact on its side, but she believes the rest of the “30 or so” bottles were smashed in the incident.

Heard claims the attack happened when they were staying together in a remote house in Australia, as Depp, 57, filmed Pirates of the Caribbean 5 in March 2015.

She said the incident began when she came downstairs to find Depp drinking heavily and clutching a bottle of alcohol, and alleges he was in the midst of drink and drugs binge.

“He was holding it, taunting me to take it and would revoke it when I reached”, she told the court.

“He did it again and I have in my head all the times he said I saved his life by standing up to him about the booze.”

She added: “It was so confusing, because when he was clean and sober he was wonderful, that part of him we loved so much.

“Everyone around him just wanted him to get clean and sober and be well – for him to get help. Johnny needs help.”

Depp is suing The Sun’s publisher, News Group Newspapers, over a 2018 article which called him a “wife beater”.

He denies all Heard’s claims of violence and suggests that she was the abuser in the relationship.

In the Australia incident he claims Heard severed part of his fingertip when she threw a bottle which “exploded” on the countertop he was leaning on.

Heard this morning denied claims that she had been the one throwing bottles, and rejected suggestions she had stubbed a cigarette out on Depp’s cheek. She has said she believed the fingertip was lost when Depp smashed a phone on the wall.

“This was a nasty incident in which you were extremely violent”, suggested Eleanor Laws QC, for Depp.

“Absolutely not”, replied Heard, who yesterday described struggling to get away from Depp after he had allegedly stripped her naked and pinned her to a kitchen counter strewn with broken glass.

She claims she was left with scars on her arms and feet from the incident, denying suggestions she had actually self-harmed.

This morning, Mr Justice Nicol refused to allow expert evidence of photos of Heard which she says show injuries to her face.

The judge said Depp’s legal team has accepted the images were not photoshopped, but they still claim she “altered her appearance in a number of possible ways before taking the photos in attempt to show some sort of marks”.

The trial continues.
