Amber Heard and Johnny Depp are currently locked in a bitter court battle, and details of their turbulent relationship have been discussed in painful detail to the jurors during the salacious defamation trial

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp ’s relationship was seemingly doomed from the start, as the early days of their romance were reportedly marred by drugs, arguments and drinking.

The former couple, who split in 2015 after a brief marriage, are currently locked in a bitter court battle, as Johnny is suing his ex-wife for defamation after she wrote an article - in which he wasn’t named - about being a victim of domestic abuse.

Amber then filed a counter-suit, and now the jurors are hearing testimony from the Hollywood stars about the ins and outs of their turbulent relationship.

They first met on the set of The Rum Diary in 2009, when they were both in relationships with other people - Johnny was with longtime partner Vanessa Paradis, while Amber was dating photographer Tasya van Ree.

Giving evidence in court, the Pirates of the Caribbean star said he felt an instant connection with Amber when they had to kiss while filming a scene, but felt uneasy as they weren't single at the time.

“That moment, was, it was, it felt like something, it felt like something I should not be feeling. I think there was something in the kiss in the shower that was real,” he explained.

After finding themselves both single in 2012 after splitting from their partners, Johnny and Amber struck up a relationship after being reunited for the press tour of The Rum Diary.

Amber said she fell 'head over heels' in love with the Hollywood star, and the quickly began dating.

But in testimony to the court, Amber claimed the early days of their romance were marred by drink and drugs, and alleged she left Johnny’s private island in the Caribbean after a bust-up involving his daughter, Lily-Rose.

She said in July 2013, an argument broke out after the youngster became “worried” about her father’s drinking, leading to Johnny reportedly pinning Amber against a wall.

“He said I made him feel sick. I will never forget it. I was very much in love with his whole family and he was saying I was embarrassing to him, that stuck more with me than ‘I could f***ing kill you.’ He hurt my feelings, it hurt,” Amber stated in court.

She alleged Johnny was taking drugs and drinking excessively, and he would “lose control” of his bodily functions after becoming violent with her while drunk and high.

“He would explode. He started doing things like destroying property and screaming at me,” she said, telling the court Johnny had “lost control” due to his addictions.

She also said she took MDMA on a flight to Russia with Johnny in 2013, as she wanted to be the “fun girlfriend”, but the scenario soon took a violent turn, leading to the actor allegedly “whacking” her in the face when they got to their hotel room.

The Aquaman star recalled other incidents during the early days of their relationship, as she claimed Johnny penetrated her with a bottle as he searched for cocaine.

The actor painted a different picture of their relationship during his three-day testimony last week, as he told jurors Amber would belittle him during long arguments, in which she would begin screaming at him.

He denied he ever hit his ex-wife, and stated: “Violence was unnecessary. Why would you hit someone to make them agree with you? I don't think it works.”

Johnny credited Amber with helping him to quit his opioid addiction in 2015, but said he would’ve relapsed if he’d have stayed with her, and told her to leave their home and go to a hotel otherwise he “would have gone straight back to the pills”.

He told the court he was a victim of domestic violence, and alleged his career has been ruined by Amber's op-ed for The Washington Post in 2018.
