Amber Heard's former attorney says Depp fired her in testimony

The defamation case brought on by Johnny Depp against his ex-wife Amber Heard has now entered its sixth and final week. The case was set to end last week, but was extended until May 27 as more evidence is yet to be presented

Proceedings regarding exes Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's libel dispute resumed in Virginia's Fairfax County Courthouse for the sixth and final week today (Monday 23 May).

The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 58, is suing his ex-wife Ms Heard, 36, for alleged defamation over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, in which she stated she was a victim of domestic abuse.

The article did not mention the actor by name, but Mr Depp argues that due to the alleged implication he is an abuser, he has lost work and been financially impacted by the piece.

The Aquaman actress is countersuing her ex-husband for $100million (£81million).

How can I watch the court case live?

Thanks to the trail taking place in Virginia, cameras and recording devices are allowed with a judge's authorisation, the entire trial has been available to stream across the globe.

What time does the Depp V Heard case begin?

Proceedings begin each day at 9am eastern time, and goes on until 5pm.

Over in the U.K, if you want to watch along live you will need to tune in at 2pm U.K time until 10pm.

When does the trial end?

The trial was originally set to end last Thursday (May 19) but has been extended until until May, as more evidence is still to be presented.

In addition to additional witnesses, Mr Depp is expected to take to the stand once again when he is questioned by his ex-wife's legal team on Monday (May 23).

Lawyers for both sides will give their closing arguments before the jury heads off to make their decision.

Could either star go to jail?

Neither Mr Depp or Ms Heard risk seeing the inside of a prison cell, as this is a civil trial, not a criminal case.

Nobody is being tried on any criminal charges.

If the jury decides to side with the plaintiff, in this case Mr Depp, then the defendant will be required to compensate the victim of libel financially.

Mr Depp is seeking $50m (£40m) in damages but a jury could decide he's deserving of more or less than his original desired amount.

How long were Johnny Depp and Amber Heard together?

Ms Heard and Mr Depp struck up a romance in 2011, after meeting on the set of the set of the comedy-drama film, The Rum Diary. They tied the knot in a civil ceremony in February 2015.

Ms Heard filed for divorce from the dad-of-two in May 2016 and obtained a temporary restraining order against him.

The final terms of the divorce settlement were agreed in January 2017, with the Pirates of the Caribbean actor required to complete a payment of $7 million to his former wife over the course of the year.
