U S actor Johnny Depp surprised fans with an impromptu meet and greet during a break from filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – and even obliged when three police officers asked for a selfie.

Dressed as his character Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp, 51, posed for selfies with the star struck officers, who later uploaded the picture to the official Facebook page for Queensland Police Service.

They captioned the image: ' Here’s Johnny! A potential new Water Police recruit? Thanks for the selfie #JohnnyDepp.'

Members of the public swarmed the actor as he posed for selfies, received kisses from adoring fans and even signed one fan's prosthetic leg in Queensland, Australia.

One female fan was so eager to get a picture with the Hollywood heartthrob that she ran out in her pyjamas.

Talking to Nine News during the meet and greet, Depp said: “I'm going to move in with the mayor and Amber and I are going to settle in with the mayor and probably live in the garage for a while, find a spot and get some pets.”

After laughing about the reference to his dogs he said: 'Oops sorry.'

Depp found himself in hot water after he flew into Australia earlier this month on a private jet with his Yorkshire Terriers, Pistol and Boo, and reportedly broke the country's strict quarantine laws after failing to declare them.

His wife Amber Heard is said to have flown the dogs out of the country after officials threatened them with a death sentence if they were not removed within two days.

Filming for the fifth instalment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been riddled with problems. Depp was forced to fly back to the US for surgery following an off set accident to his hand, tropical cyclone Nathan disrupted second unit photography and most recently filming was moved to Raby Bay because conditions on the Gold Coast became too rough.
