In this stage, you will be asked to perform onerous tasks for money. The system works as follows. You will be consecutively asked about the maximum number of tasks you would do for specific amounts of money. Each task deals with either addition and subtraction of large numbers or with counting 0s in long sequences. Here are examples of each type of tasks.
For the addition and subtraction type of tasks, you might see:
29876545543 + 127689999 + 222223334445 + 8000009 - 24567 = ?
In place of the question mark, there will be a box in which you will enter the resulting number. If the number you enter is correct, then you proceed with the next question. If it is incorrect, you get one warning. If you get a second warning, the experiment will be abruptly stopped, and you will not receive the payoff you are competing for. That is why you are strongly advised to use a calculator (or pen and paper to make notes) and double check your answer before submitting it.
For the counting 0s in long sequences type of tasks, you might see:
52302320320320320320302320302302030230203203023020320320302032030230203203023020320302302032034230423043040340303000003430.
Then, there will be a question: "How many 0s are there in the sequence?". There will be a box in which you will enter the correct number of 0s. If the number you enter is correct, then you proceed with the next question. If it is incorrect, you get one warning. If you get a second warning, the experiment will be abruptly stopped, and you will not receive the payoff you are competing for. That is why you are strongly advised to double check your answer before submitting it.
Please, proceed to the next section which will explain in detail how you will select the maximum number of tasks you would do for specific amounts of money.
