Introduction and Background Information

You are invited to participate in a research study. This study is being conducted by Ion Juvina, Ph.D., Michael Collins, Jarean Carson, and Preston Menke, Wright State University. Approximately 700 subjects will be invited to participate.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate some of the factors that affect learning in different conditions.

Procedures

In this study, you will be asked to use a computer to perform a paired-associates task. This task involves memorizing combinations of words and numbers. You will also complete survey questions before, during, and after the study. You will be placed into one of three possible conditions. The approximate time to complete this study will be 2 hours. This study will be conducted over 1 session.

Potential Risks

There are risks associated with this study. Those risks are wrist strain, finger strain, eye strain, fatigue, and soreness from regular computer use, and claustrophobia from the booths you will be performing the study in.

COVID-19 Precautions

Presently in our community, there is an existing risk: the novel coronavirus 2019 (called SARS-CoV-2), which causes the disease COVID-19. We believe that the risk to you for contracting COVID-19 by participating in this research is no more than your risk for contracting this disease from the community. That is, the risk is no more than your risk when going to the grocery store or spending time inside another shared space outside the home, where everyone is wearing a face covering. The following steps are being taken to address the risk of coronavirus infection:

Screening: Researchers and participants who show potential symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, shortness of breath, etc.) will NOT participate in this study at this time.

Physical distancing: Whenever possible, we will maintain at least 6 feet of distance between persons while conducting the study.

Mask/Covering: Researchers will wear and participants will be required to shield their mouth and nose with a cloth face cover or mask during the study, even when maintaining at least 6 feet of distance. Tissues will be available to cover coughs and sneezes.

Handwashing: Researchers and participants will wash hands before the experiment or use a hand sanitizer.

Disinfecting materials: Researchers will clean and disinfect surfaces between participants, using an EPA-registered disinfectant or a bleach solution (5 tablespoons of regular bleach per gallon of water) for hard materials and by laundering soft materials. Disinfected materials will be handled using gloves, paper towel, plastic wrap, or storage bags to reduce the chance of re-contamination of materials.

Electronics: Alcohol-based wipes or sprays will be used to disinfect shared touch screens, mice, keyboards, etc. Surfaces will be dried to avoid pooling of liquids.

Benefits

There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this study. This study will provide potential benefits to society and the scientific community. A better understanding of the cognitive mechanisms involved in individual and team-based learning will potentially lead to improved academic performance and structure. The information collected may not benefit you directly. The information learned in this study may be helpful to others.

Compensation

You will receive course credits or be paid money for your time or inconvenience while you are in this study. Base compensation for participation in this study will be 2 course credits or $10 an hour. You will be able to earn up to 2 course credits or $10 in addition to the base compensation through performance incentives. Should you need to leave before the study is completed, your compensation will be pro-rated at a rate of 2 course credits or $10 per hour of participation rounding up. Performance incentives achieved will be added to your compensation.

Confidentiality

Total privacy cannot be guaranteed. We will protect your privacy to the extent permitted by law. If the results from this study are published, your name will not be made public. Once your information leaves our institution, we cannot promise that others will keep it private.

Your information may be shared with the following:

Security

Personal information will be kept on a password-protected computer and in a locked file cabinet in a locked office on campus at Wright State University.

Conflict of Interest

This study may involve a conflict of interest because the institution and/or the investigator will be compensated for your participation in it. Please ask the investigator how the institution and/or investigator will benefit by your participation in the study.

Voluntary Participation

Taking part in this study is voluntary. You may choose not to take part at all. If you decide to be in this study you may stop taking part at any time. If you decide not to be in this study or if you stop taking part at any time, you will not lose any benefits for which you may qualify and you will be compensated for the time that you were present.
