Welcome, and thank you for participating in this decision-making experiment. Please make all decisions on your own and do not consult or discuss the experiment with anyone else.
At the end of today’s session, you will receive a $5 participation payment, plus any additional earnings determined by the decisions you make and certain random factors. Please read the instructions carefully. A good understanding of the instructions and thoughtful decisions may increase the amount of cash you receive in addition to your participation payment.
All responses and information you provide in this study will be kept anonymous and used for research purposes only.
Today’s experiment consists of three work shifts and a questionnaire. You will earn money based on your productivity in the task and receive a $5 participation payment. Payment for the task is subject to tax, which may vary across work shifts. The payment and tax system for each work shift will be explained before that work shift begins.
You will have the opportunity to work on a task for up to 30 minutes in total, divided into three 10-minute work shifts. After the first 10-minute work shift, you will have a 8-minute break. After the second 10-minute work shift, you will have another 8-minute break. The third 10-minute work shift will follow the second break.
However, you may choose to end any work shift early and move to the break before the 10 minutes are over. Any remaining time from that work shift will be added to the break time, including the third work shift. This means that the experiment will not end earlier if you stop working before the shift ends. Instead, taking a break before the shift ends simply changes your time allocation between work and break. During the break, you may use your cellphone or browse the internet.
At the end of the experiment, you will learn the outcomes of your decisions and be informed of your final payment.
