SUMMARY OF KEY INFORMATION: You are about to participate in a session of an experiment administered by researchers at the Experimental and Behavioral Economics Laboratory (EBEL). The session you are about to participate in will take the amount of time indicated in the slot you signed up for. The experimenter will confirm the expected length of the session prior to reading instructions. If you are participating in a zoom session or in a session physically in the laboratory, you should make sure that you are available for the expected duration of the session to focus exclusively on the experiment. If for any reason you are not available to exclusively dedicate to the experiment for the expected duration, please let the experimenter know immediately.
PURPOSE: You are being asked to participate in a research study. The purpose of the study is to understand decision-making in economic environments.
PROCEDURES: If you decide to participate, we will present you instructions for the experiment that describe the choices that you can make and how your choices will translate into payments. The experiment is implemented exactly as described in the instructions and other provided materials. There is no instance in experiments implemented by EBEL in which the instructions include a lie. After reading the instructions, we will proceed with the main part of the experiment. You will make choices using the terminal (computer) that you are currently using and the instructions will describe how you will use your terminal. At the end of the experiment, we will determine your compensation and the session will be over. If you are participating in a session via Zoom, we will not videotape the session, but we will ask you to stay in the zoom meeting for the duration of the experiment in case we need to communicate with you or you need to communicate with us.
RISKS: There are no risks in this experiment beyond those of everyday life.
BENEFITS: There is no direct benefit to you anticipated from your participation in this study.
CONFIDENTIALITY Your identity is confidential and the collection procedure is such that your choices cannot be linked back to your identity.
COSTS/PAYMENT: Payments will be based on decisions made. The minimum payment equals $2.5 for experiments that last up to 30 minutes and $5 for experiments that last longer than 30 minutes. Average payments are calibrated to be higher than minimum payments, namely at or above the state minimum wage.
RIGHT TO REFUSE OR WITHDRAW: Participation in the study is voluntary and you may refuse to participate or withdraw at any time. If you withdraw, your compensation equals $2.5 if the session is expected to last 30 minutes, or $5 if the session lasts for longer than 30 minutes. Non-participation will not affect your grades or academic standing.
QUESTIONS: If you have any questions about this research project or if you think you may have been injured as a result of your participation, please contact: Ryan Oprea (ryan.oprea@ucsb.edu).
