I am asking you to participate in a research study exploring investment behavior in the presence of risk. I will describe this study to you and answer any of your questions. This study is being led by Myles Winkley, Undergraduate in the Department of Economics. The Faculty Advisor for this study is Michele Belot, Department of Economics.

What we will ask you to do: We will ask you to allocate virtual assets between two simulated funds in a portfolio, acting as a manager of a college’s endowment. Completion of all your decisions should take 15-30 minutes on average. Even though you may receive negative returns on your portfolio during the study, you will still receive monetary rewards from participation in this study.

We do not anticipate any risks from participating in this research.

Through this study, we hope to learn about the investment decisions of individuals.

Compensation for participation: You will receive compensation for your participation in this study and payment will increase based on performance. This will range from $5-15 depending on the decisions you will take, as well as chance, and you will be paid after the study has concluded, as your relative performance will partially determine your monetary reward. This payment will be in the form of Amazon Gift Cards delivered to an email address of your choice.

Privacy/Confidentiality/Data Security The only identifying information that will be collected is your email address, and your email address will only be used to facilitate payment. Your contact information will be deleted from our records immediately after payment and will not be linked to any of the decisions or information we will collect during the study.

Please note that the survey is being conducted using software from Heroku and O-Tree, companies not affiliated with Cornell and with their privacy and security policies that you can find at their respective websites.

Please note that email communication is neither private nor secure. Though we are taking precautions to protect your privacy, you should be aware that information sent through e-mail could be read by a third party. However, participating in this study represents no greater risk than usual internet use.

Sharing De-identified Data Collected in this Research: De-identified data from this study may be shared with the research community at large to advance science and health. We will ensure it will not be possible to identify you. Despite these measures, we cannot guarantee anonymity of your personal data.

Future use of Identifiable Data or Specimens Collected in this Research: De-identified information will be made available for future research without additional consent.

Taking part is voluntary: Your participation is voluntary, and you may withdraw from the study at any time by simply exiting the web-page. However, in order to receive payment for participation, you must complete the survey.
