You are invited to participate in a research study on group decisions and investments. You were selected as a possible participant because you are a member of Prolific Panel. We ask that you read this form and ask any questions you may have before consenting to be in the study.

Thank you for agreeing to participate in our research. Before you begin, please note that the data you provide may be collected and used by Prolific Panel as per its privacy agreement. Additionally, this research is for United States citizens over the age of 18; if you are not a citizen of the United States and/or under the age of 18, please do not complete this study. The study is being conducted by Muna Adem from the Department of Sociology at Indiana University.

STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of the research is to improve our scientific understanding of problem-solving and human group dynamics.

PROCEDURES FOR THE STUDY

If you agree to be in the study, you will do the following things:

We will first ask some basic demographic questions such as income, race and gender. Afterwards, you will participate in two online investment games that take about 5-7 minutes in total. You will play against other participants and decide how money to give to them or keep for yourself. The study will then end with a longer questionnaire that will take about 5-8 minutes to finish.

RISKS AND BENEFITS

All research comes with the potential loss of confidentiality. Please see the confidentiality section below for more information. You may feel uncomfortable participating in this study. You can stop participation at any time or skip any question you do not want to answer. While there are no direct benefits, we do hope that your participation in this study will help researchers gain a better understanding of how people make individual decisions in group settings.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Efforts will be made to keep your personal information confidential. Data will be kept securely and not shared with anyone else, your Prolific ID will only be used for compensation and will not be connected to your answers. We cannot guarantee absolute confidentiality. Your personal information may be disclosed if required by law. Your identity will be held in confidence in reports in which the study may be published and databases in which results may be stored. Organizations that may inspect and/or copy your research records for quality assurance and data analysis include groups such as the study investigators and their research associates, the Indiana University, Bloomington Institutional Review Board or its designees, the study sponsor, and (as allowed by law) state or federal agencies, specifically the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) who may need to access your medical and/or research records. Information collected in this study may be used for other research studies or shared with other researchers for future research. If this happens, information that could identify you, such as your name and other identifiers, will be removed before any information or specimens are shared. Since identifying information will be removed, we will not ask for your additional consent.

PAYMENT

You will receive payment for taking part in this study. You will receive $3 for sure for participating in this study but you can earn a total of $15 depending on you and your partners’ action.

VOLUNTARY NATURE OF THE STUDY

Taking part in this study is voluntary. You may choose not to take part or may leave the study at any time.
