Welcome to the "Automated vs. Human Work Control" experiment!

This study focuses on work control mechanisms, workers preferences for different treatments and workers trust in different controllers. During the study the two different treatments that we will observe are “Automated Control” (AC) and “Human Control” (HC).

Please read the following page carefully to get a complete understanding of how the experiment is going to proceed.

Experimental Procedure

The experiment you are about to take part in will be divided in 3 parts, starting with this introduction.

Once the introduction is done you will be asked to exert a decision between the 2 control mechanism, “Automated Control” (AC) and “Human Control” (HC), which will be implanted on you for the remainder of the experiment.

Once all players have made a choice a role will be assigned to you between “Agent” and “Principals”, then a work effort task will start. The “Agent” will take part directly in the work effort task, consisting of 25, 2-digit number sums (e.g. 25+77), with a maximum allotted time of 3 minutes. The “Principals” will exert the HC, choosing the threshold of control for a set number of “Agent” players. Only players that choose HC or decide to stay indifferent may be assigned this role.

After the end of this task player that were “Agent” will be asked to respond to a survey which will be used to better understand their behavior throughout the experiment.

Control Treatments

  1. Automated Control (AC): under AC an automated system will check a set number of the total calculations (25 total) randomly for completion and correctness.
  2. Human Control (HC): under HC a randomly chosen player will be in charge, becoming a “Principals”, and will be tasked with setting the % of calculations that will be checked randomly among the whole task. The player can choose any number between 0-100%.

Payoff Structure

Each “Agent” will start with a wage of 5 points, which could then be reduced by 0.2 points for each checked calculation that results either wrong or incomplete out of the total 25 calculations. Depending on the treatment a certain number of the total calculations will be checked, only in situations where all 25 calculations are checked and non is resulting correct the payoff might be 0.

For “Principals” the payoff will be fixed to 3 points, considering the shorter duration of their experiment.
